Miss Sweden Drops out of Miss Universe Pageant
Twenty-year-old Miss Sweden, Isabel Lestapier Winqvist, is dropping out of the Miss Universe pageant after pressure from her country and the Miss Sweden pageant claiming the pageant is degrading to women and amok with scandals.
Isabel Lestapier Winqvist, 20, has dropped out because Swedes say the Miss Universe competition, airing live Monday night from Mexico City’s National Auditorium, is degrading to women and weighed down by scandals.
“We’re taking a big beating by being linked to it,” said Panos Papadopoulos, the organizer of the Miss Sweden contest, which scrapped its swimsuit competition and allowed women to apply for the position like any other job after heavy criticism from feminists.
Pageants calling other pageants degrading? No one makes these women do these pageants beyond the crazy pageant moms who are living through their kids. Degrading though? If you want to talk about something being degrading to women then talk about Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton flashing their crotches or letting their boobs hang out. Watching a woman in a swimsuit on TV is a whole lot less degrading than lusting over one at the beach, five feet away from you.

Pagentry isn’t taken as seriously in Sweden as it is in the US(there aren’t really any childrens pagents), so I can understand why she wouldn’t want to be connected to the scandals of those more serious pagents. What’s wrong with having principles? Yay Sweden!
I’m swedish and I think it’s a wonderful thing she has done. I do think it was planned from the start though….to get more attention from the press. Whatever.
They were talking about the portion with the swin suits, in the pagent in sweden, they do not have that part of the compition
