Movies Opening Today (September 7, 2007)

3:10 To Yuma - (R) A rancher struggles to support his ranch and family during a long drought. Desperately needing money to build a well, he takes an assignment to transport a notorious felon, in the hands of authorities, to Yuma for imprisonment. But, once the two meet, the criminal tries to tempt him with–in exchange for allowing him to escape–an offer of much more money than the rancher ever expected, the result of a hidden loot.
The Brothers Solomon - (R) Brothers John and Dean Solomon are on a quest to find a woman–any woman–willing to bear their child and fulfill the wish of their dying father. After a few dating disasters, it looks as if the brothers may beat the odds and find what they’re looking for when Dean meets a woman eager to have his baby. Unfortunately, she is flattened by a passing bus right before his eyes. Undeterred, the single-minded brothers change tactics, ditching conventional dating to try their luck with, in short succession, a street hooker, an adoption agency and finally, the Craigslist website. Their online ad quickly attracts a response from Janine, who agrees to be a surrogate mother for their child–for a hefty fee. Janine’s pining ex, James, is none too thrilled about her decision, but a trip to the fertility clinic ensues and before long Janine is with child. As the pregnancy progresses and the brothers embark on an ill-advised self-study course in parenting, Janine finally begins to warm to the brothers’ earnest enthusiasm. Even James, with whom she is now reunited, can’t help but laugh at their antics. Perhaps they will make decent dads after all. But as the birth date looms, Janine gets cold feet and vanishes. For the first time, the brothers’ tireless optimism flags and it occurs to them that–despite the double Ph.D.s they each earned during their home schooling days in the North Pole–they might be losers after all. But rather than give up, the tenacious siblings decide to do everything within their power to find Janine and fulfill their father’s wish.
Shoot ‘Em Up - (R) Mr. Smith, the angriest, most hardboiled man in the world, finds himself entrusted to protect the most innocent thing of all–a newborn child. When Smith delivers the baby in the middle of a gunfight, he soon discovers that the infant is the target of a shadowy force that has sent a team of mysterious and endless assailants, led by Hertz, to erase all traces of the baby. Amid a hail of bullets and facing every conceivable permutation of gunfight, Smith teams up with a prostitute named DQ to solve the mystery as to why the baby’s life is being threatened before this makeshift family all ends up on the wrong side of a bullet. Everyone wants the baby dead. The big question is why?
Fierce People - (R) When 16-year-old Finn is caught buying cocaine for his junkie but well intentioned mother Liz, his plans of spending the summer away from NYC with his anthropologist father studying the Ishkanani in the jungle are abruptly changed. In an attempt to get both of their lives back on track, Liz moves the two of them out to a cottage on the country estate of her sugar daddy, Mr. Osborne. Finn immediately makes his way into the ‘tribe’ of wealthy country clubbers that inhabit his new home. Soon Finn is dating Mr. Osborne’s granddaughter Maya and has found a best friend in her brother Bryce. Finn adjusts quickly to their life of fancy clothes, cars, horses, sex and drugs. Liz begins attending AA meetings and begins to establish herself as a loving mother working to correct her mistakes and win back Finn’s love and trust. Unfortunately things begin to spiral out of control, and he begins to see that the wealth and friendships bestowed upon him come at a price.
