BCS NCAA Football Championship Chaos Breakdown
The BCS Selection Show airs at 7pm CST today to determine which two teams will play for the National Championship. With Missouri and West Virginia losing last night it will be a toss up as to which teams will be playing in New Orleans for all of the marbles.
The likely teams to play for the championship are the Ohio State Buckeyes, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, Georgia Bulldogs, Virginia Tech Hookies and the USC Trojans. The Bumpshack BS Top 5 last week would indicate that it will be Ohio State and Georgia.
OSU and UGA didn’t play yesterday while LSU, Oklahoma, USC and Virginia Tech did. Yesterday LSU beat the Tennessee Vols 21-14 in the SEC Championship. Oklahoma beat #1 ranked Missouri Tigers 38-17. USC beat the cross-town rival UCLA Bruins 24-7. Virginia Tech beat Boston College 30-16.
Ohio State Buckeyes - (11-1)
Wins against Top 25: #23 Purdue, #25 Penn State, #21 Michigan
Losses: Illinois
So Why or Why Not: They did not play on Saturday and have played an extremely weak schedule. Their biggest win was against a Michigan team that lost to Appalachian State. I don’t believe Ohio State should be rewarded by not playing on Saturday and the weak schedule they played against all year. However, by default and lack of a conference championship game, I believe Ohio State will be selected to play in the BCS National Championship as the #1 team in the country.
Georgia Bulldogs - (10-2)
Wins Against Top 25: #16 Alabama, #11 Florida, #18 Auburn, #23 Kentucky
Losses: South Carolina, Tennessee
So Why or Why Not: They probably deserve to play for the NC more than Ohio State for two reasons: They haven’t lost since October 6th and they beat four top 25 teams. They shouldn’t be there because They lost to a 6-6 South Carolina team and to Tennessee in a blowout. They also didn’t play in the SEC Championship or even win the SEC East. LSU beat both teams (South Carolina and Tennessee) that Georgia lost to early in the season. If a team from the SEC belongs in New Orleans it is LSU and not the Bulldogs.
LSU Tigers - (11-2)
Wins Against Top 25: #9 Virginia Tech, #12 South Carolina, #9 Florida, #17 Auburn, #17 Alabama, #14 Tennessee
Losses: Kentucky (3OT), Arkansas (3OT)
So Why or Why Not: LSU is probably the most talented team in the country and also got off to the hottest start of any team in college football. They beat six top 25 teams at the time they played them. They won the championship of arguably the toughest conference in America. On the other hand, LSU played worse as the year went on. Injuries have ravaged them on both sides of the ball. They lost to an unranked Arkansas team at home. They should play for the National Championship based on the number of top 25 wins and for winning the SEC Championship amidst a heap of controversy and drama yesterday. The game is in New Orleans and the area would get a big lift from their beloved Bayou Tigers playing for another national title.
Oklahoma Sooners - (11-2)
Wins Against Top 25: #19 Texas, #11 Missouri, #1 Missouri
Losses: Colorado, Texas TechSo Why or Why Not: Oklahoma lost to two inferior opponents to Colorado and Texas Tech that were a combined 14-10. They beat the #1 team in the country last night by twenty-one points. Their last loss, against Texas Tech, happened after Heisman Trophy candidate Sam Bradford was hurt early in the first quarter. They can without a doubt beat anybody they would play for the National Championship. I think they will have a hard time jumping over several teams that either didn’t play yesterday or who won as well on Championship Saturday.
Virgina Tech Hookies - (11-2)
Wins Against Top 25: #22 Clemson, #16 Virginia, #11 Boston College
Losses: LSU, Boston College
So Why or Why Not: They had three big wins against top 25 teams and avenged one of their losses yesterday by beating Boston College rather easily in the ACC Championship. Their second loss of the season, that took place against Boston College, was a game they led throughout before blowing it in the last minute. Many voters will have a hard time putting Va Tech over the LSU Tigers. LSU crushed Tech 48-7 in the second game of the season. I don’t like their odds of playing for the National Championship over LSU.
USC Trojans - (10-2)
Wins Against Top 25: #14 Nebraska, #24 California, #6 Arizona State
Losses: Stanford, Oregon
So Why or Why Not: USC has been hot of late and finished the season strong. They beat cross-town rival UCLA yesterday by a nice sum. They did not play in a conference championship because the Pac-10 doesn’t have one for some odd reason. Only one of the top 25 teams they beat will finish the season in the top 25. They lost at home against 40-point underdog Stanford. I believe not playing in a conference championship game, the lack of top 25 wins, and losing to Stanford will be more than enough to keep media favorite USC out of New Orleans.
National Championship Prediction: Ohio State Buckeyes v. LSU Tigers
My Final Regular Season Top 10
- Oklahoma Sooners
- LSU Tigers
- Virgina Tech Hookies
- Georgia Bulldogs
