America’s Next Top Model is where the world met the beautiful Heather Kuzmich, but she will become more famous for more than just her pretty face. Heather has the neurological disorder known as Asperger’s Syndrome.

The disease affects communication skills, social interaction and is a form of autism. Asperger’s was discovered by Hans Asperger in 1944.

But what makes the 21-year-old Ms. Kuzmich different from others with Asperger’s is that for the past 11 weeks, her struggle to cope with her disability has played out on national television.

She is one of 13 young women selected by the supermodel Tyra Banks to compete on the popular reality television show “America’s Next Top Model.” The addition of Heather Kuzmich to an otherwise superficial show has given millions of viewers an unusual and compelling glimpse into the little-understood world of Asperger’s.

The disorder, considered a form of autism, is characterized by unusual social interaction and communication skills.

Heather is already a role model to many with Aperger’s and as her platform grows she will continue to become a hero to millions of women and men around the world.

I conducted an interview with Heather about her Asperger’s:

I was so disappointed with the booting of Heather - I really understood her (my 10 year old has Asperger’s) They are so similar, both talented in art - both find it hard to “find the right words” and both deal with insensitive people everyday.

    Thanks for posting this :)

I’m just glad that someone was finally brave enough to go on a reality show who had Asperger’s Syndrome, and represent all those people out there who have that disorders. as for the comment made by Maritza, she obviously doesn’t realize that Heather couldn’t help her awkward ness, and this Maritza needs to go fuck off, if she’s just going to bash one of my favorite girls on this cycle of America’s next Top Model.

I also have aspergers. Watching Heather was difficult at first because I felt embarassed for her and myself, that we’re so different. But as I watched I started thinking that maybe we’re OK just the way we are. Though I do wish people didn’t treat us like we’re retarded or slow. We’re truly not.
