Original Goth Chick Maila Nurmi Dies at 85

Maila Vampira Nurmi

Maila ‘Vampira’ Nurmi the original goth chick died Thursday.  She was 85-years-old.  Her seductive ‘Vampira’ character was the first of it’s kind.

Her persona went on to inspire Morticia Adams from The Adams Family and B-List actress/endorser Elvira, who was played by Cassandra Peterson.

Nurmi, who died Thursday at the age of 85, first made an impression in the 1950s when she invented the Vampira character to host a Los Angeles-area horror-movie TV show. Her sexy succubus seemed an apparent inspiration for later horror/camp sirens like Carolyn Jones’ Morticia Addams and especially Cassandra Peterson’s Elvira, though Nurmi filed an unsuccessful $10 million lawsuit against Peterson for allegedly stealing her character.

Nurmi was original and innovative with her dark yet seductive feminine vampire character.

Maila had no clue 55 years ago that she would go on to inspire such model citizens as Amy Winehouse and Marilyn Manson.
