Live Blogging: Roger Clemens vs. Brian McNamee
(Click to Refresh)
2:48 pm - Rep. Tom Davis is speaking to conclude the day. All of the questioning is done. Davis says the Mitchell Report and it’s recommendations are good. He thanks the witnesses for coming before the committee. Rep. Henry Waxman is giving his closing remarks. Clemens interjects angrily about Pettitte’s memory. Waxman gives special thanks to McNamee and apologizes for some of the comments/shots that his colleagues took at McNamee. And the hearing is concluded and everyone is adjourned. All in all four hours and forty-one minutes.
2:40 pm - Rep. Diane Watson asks both Roger and Brian about their opinions of the Mitchell Report. McNamee says that education has to come from parents and coaches about illegal drug use. He says the Mitchell Report is chapter one. He says to educated the trainers, mothers, brothers, etc.
2:33 pm - Rep. Shays comes at McNamee hard calling him a drug dealer and asks McN if he is a drug dealer. McNamee says that is his opinion.
2:24 pm - Rep. Elijah Cummings says he believes Andy Pettitte the most. Cummings asked why Pettitte said that Clemens had used drugs in 2003/4. Roger says he doesn’t know and that Andy didn’t tell him that he used HGH. Cummings has been one of the hardest on Clemens. Cummings pounds the fact that Pettitte and Knoblauch confessed to using HGH and why McNamee would lie about Clemens. Cummings is hanging his opinion on the honesty and character of Pettitte.
2:10 pm - Rep. Virginia Foxx says she disagrees with the hearings and the game of ‘gotcha’ that seems to take place in these hearings. She wants to get back to doing her real job. She asks about HGH and McNamee injected Debbie Clemens. Roger reads a statement from Debbie. Roger was not at home when Debbie was injected by Brian. Debbie claims it was a harmless act on her part. She had a brief adverse reaction and along with Brian agreed to back off of it. She throws up four photos throughout Clemens career and she says that they show no difference in his size. Granted he is in a baggy uniform in all of them. She throws him a softball wanting to know his training routine. Roger says he was not in the ‘twilight of his career’ as a former Red Sox GM claimed back in 1997.
2:07 pm - Rep. Souder asks for a notation in the record that it is common for New Yorkers to say “It is what it is.” Souder asked a New Yorker and that it does in fact mean what McNamee claims it does.
1:59 pm - More questioning about the recorded phone conversation between Clemens and McNamee. Rep. Westmoreland asks why McNamee didn’t tell Roger he was telling the truth. McN reiterates that he did in his own way, “It is what it is.” Four hours into questioning and not a whole lot of new info currently being divulged.
1:53 pm - Rep. Darrell Issa is looking into the Mitchell Report once again. Clemens agrees that baseball is going in the right direction. Scheeler stands by all of the report. Such grandstanding by Issa. Concludes with a ’shame on you’ for McNamee.
1:47 pm - Rep Bruce Braley is giving McNamee the lecture of using his life to warn children of the dangers of drugs. Braley asks Clemens if he has been diagnosed with anemia, vegetarian, and Alzheimer’s. He asks because that is what people take B-12 for and that it is given in injection form only for the above conditions. Clemens says he looks at using B-12 as being healthy and that his mom recommended it to him in 1988.
1:42 pm - Rep. John Duncan is conducting the current line of questioning. Roger is giving more emotional pleas of his honesty and good acts throughout his career. He is trying to prove that baseball can find him when they need him and that they didn’t for the Mitchell Report. Roger says he is an easy person to find.
1:32 pm - Rep. Danny Davis asks Scheeler about if it is normal for someone (like Clemens) to go to all of the Congresspeople last week and talk to them. He says that is not normal. Davis is asking about recordings Clemens made of McNamee which were not fully released. A bit of tricky questioning about corroboration. I am not sure exactly on the angle. Roger’s investigators asked McNamee if he had a paper trail on Roger. Roger says he didn’t know what the investigators were asking Brian about. Roger continues to deny using anything. Not a whole lot accomplished by Davis.
1:23 pm - And we continue….. Rep. Davis starts the second session off talking about the Canseco party once again. The nanny is again in question. Roger says it was great to see the nanny at his house last weekend. Now Roger says he is not positive that he didn’t take his wife back to the party to drop her off. Lots of questions about McNamee’s PhD.
1:06 pm - 15 minute recess
1:04 pm - Rep Eleanor Holmes Norton is asking Roger why he kept employing McNamee after several instances of distrust, including the botched injection to his wife. Roger’s attorneys are whispering over his shoulder why and how to answer. Norton is pressing the question of why Roger kept McNamee employed as his trainer. Roger says he is a forgiving person and believes in second chances. She concludes by saying she is sure Roger is going to heaven ?!?!?
12:54 pm - Chairperson Waxman is back on the Canseco meeting. He says that Clemens and his team wouldn’t turn over the name of the nanny, that would have known for sure if Clemens was at the party. They finally contacted the nanny yesterday and the nanny said she was at the house of Canseco with Debbie, the Clemens children and ROGER. WOW! Roger’s attorney’s throw a fit and start objecting and standing up and speaking, which they aren’t allowed to do. Waxman says it was, in his opinion, improper to invite the nanny over to Roger’s house, before turning over the nanny’s name to the committee. This is BOMBSHELL #2.
12:46 pm - Rep. William Lacy Clay asks Clemens for another denial. Roger complies and denies again. Clemens is giving an emotional testimony about his work ethic and all he has over come. He is speaking about his sister in law that was murdered over drugs. Also says his mother pulled one of his brothers out of college over smoking weed.
12:40 pm - Rep Mark Souder is asking McNamee about the DNA evidence. Lot of internet traffic slowing down the blog. Souder is asking for a release of the depositions and for the committee to look into the owners for their implication.
12:32 pm - Rep Carolyn Maloney from New York gets her five minutes to question the witnesses. She is asking why he refused to meet with the Mitchell committee. She calls out the 60 Minutes interview where Roger said he took the advice of his council to not talk to the committee. Maloney says Clemens told the Congressional deposition that Mitchell didn’t try to contact him. She is going on a long paper trail of Clemens claiming he was never told that Mitchell wanted to talk to him. Roger said differently on 60 Minutes with Mike Wallace. Maloney says there is six times under oath that Roger said he didn’t know of Mitchell’s attempts but that he said on 60 Minutes that he was aware and took advice to turn the meeting down. Maloney says she would have fired her staff if they kept info from her.
12:28 pm - Mica is wasting time asking Clemens about what color he thought this or that was. B-12 is red and pink according to Clemens. I don’t get the line of questioning because all Clemens has to answer is what color B-12 happens to be. Kind of a waste of time all the way around. Clemens reiterates that McNamee has never given him steroids or HGH.
12:21 pm - Rep. John Mica takes over and starts questioning McNamee about physical evidence. He asks if the extent of the physical evidence being the gauze and syringes. Brian names a couple of other things that involve needle heads and other injection items. McNamee verifies that Roger’s blood (DNA) is on the physical evidence and would test true. Now they are talking about the colors of HGH, steroids, B-12 and lidocaine. Clemens agrees that McNamee could have a gauze pad with his blood stain on it.
12:15 pm - Rep. Kanjorski turns the questions to the third person at the table. That person being Charles Scheeler from the Mitchell Report committee. He is being asked if George Mitchell reviewed everything and stands by it. Scheeler is being questioned about the Canseco party. Again, I don’t think the Canseco party is that big of a part of this controversy.
12:09 pm - This is murky material. I am not sure anyone asking the questions currently understands exactly what was or wasn’t on Clemens rump. Davis asks why as a former cop McNamee injected athletes with illegal drugs. Chairperson Waxman concludes this portion that there was an injury on Roger’s buttocks, it was in team records and from an injection. Everyone agrees. Rep. Davis continues to try to stand up for Roger.
12:02 pm - Rep. Davis is questioning McNamee about the abscess. McN says Clemens threw the winstrol in his locker and told him he wanted to quit taking this stuff. Davis says that several on the Blue Jays medical staff don’t remember the bump on Clemens rump.
11:55 am - Lynch continues with a long list of experts stating that they have never seen this from a B-12 injection. That it was likely from winstrol (steroids). This is a coup for McNamee. Now he is asking Roger how he is suppose to take these findings. Roger says he has no clue that his team didn’t hand over everything. The Congressmen sort of went back and forth and disagreed a bit. Rep. Davis has a problem with Clemens being asked a medical question.
11:48 am - Rep. Stephen Lynch takes over the questioning. Lynch is from Massachusetts, will be interesting to see if there is a bias. Records from the Blue Jays showing a mass on Clemens butt. McNamee claims to have injected Roger with winstrol (sp) back in 1998. McNamee learned later that the injection has to be done slowly or it could create an infection. MRI states that the mass was “likely related to the patient’s prior attempted intramuscular injections.” Committee had Dr. Murphy look over the report of neutral finding. Dr. Murphy concurred that the injury was not a strained muscle but from an injection. Dr. Murphy, in his opinion, believes the injection was from steroids. This is blowing up. Clemens attorney is trying to object and interject. He is denied.
11:44 am - Burton continues to call McNamee a liar and call out his inconsistencies. Rep. Burton is being a bit unprofessional. Burton is using quotes of McNamee before any of this broke about his denial of steroids. Irrelevant…Burton is grandstanding and probably has a room full of autographed Clemens memorabilia now. Burton finally stops thank God.
11:39 am - McNamee is being questioned again about Roger not being at Canseco’s party. McNamee is asked why he kept the needles and gauze pads. McN being asked why he kept working for someone he thought would cause him harm. McN says he was his employer. Brian says he just felt uneasy about Roger and that others had hurt him before. Rep. Dan Burton is not buying it and just verbally said “gee wizz”. This is as hot at McNamee’s seat has been so far. I think Burton is trying to get McNamee to blow up. He tore him a new one.
11:33 am - Clemens is getting nailed by Tierney and his lying about never talking to McNamee about taking HGH. Clemens now says he did have a heated conversation with McN injecting his wife with HGH.
11:29 am - Rep. John Tierney is questioning McNamee’s telling the truth during a court hearing years ago. McNamee fesses up and says he did not tell the truth. He is asked about holding back evidence. McN says that he was trying not to hurt players by not telling the exact number of injections he gave players. Tierney is now questioning Clemens and his inaccuracies. Clemens and his wife gave the committee differing accounts about Debbie’s HGH usage. Tierney shows contradiction of Roger talking to McN about injecting his wife with HGH but Clemens earlier said that he and McNamee never had any conversations about taking HGH.
11:20 am - Davis is questioning McNamee hard about the party in 1998 at Jose Canseco’s party. McNamee is the only one that remembers Clemens being at the party. McN says he saw Roger and Debbie Clemens at the party. Davis is now peppering Clemens about being at Canseco’s party. Clemens is pretty foggy on all of this.
11:15 am - Talk about Clemens bleeding through his designer pants in the Yankees locker room and conversations about Yankees pitcher Mike Stanton asking Roger about steroids. Roger said he would do anything to take an edge.
11:08 am - Cummings concludes asking McNamee to verify a conversation where McN told Pettitte that Clemens was not suppose to have told Andy about the HGH. Rep. Davis is in control now and asking most of his questions towards McNamee.
11:00 am - Internet connection is sucking. Just lost the first 2/3rds of this live blog. Cummings is continuing to slam Roger hard. Roger is nervous. Cummings keeps quoting Andy Pettitte’s wife and things Andy had told her about Roger.
10:59 am - Clemens says he was shocked when he found out Andy used HGH because they were so close that Andy would have come to talk to him before trying it (suspicious). Testimony of Pettitte saying he has NO DOUBT about Roger saying he used HGH.
10:55 am - Rep. Elijah Cummings comes out hitting Roger hard. He is using the Pettitte again and quotes Roger’s attorney stating that they had nothing to worry about Pettitte testifying against them. Clemens says Andy is a very honest fellow. Pettitte confirmed McNamee injected him. Pettitte volunteered that he injected himself in 2004. Cummings says it was even harder for Andy to talk about Clemens during his testimony. Andy said “I have to tell you all the truth and one day I have to give an account to God and nobody else in my life.” Cummings keeps reminding Clemens that he is under oath. Clemens is thinking through his words very carefully. Clemens says that he thinks Andy has misheard. Clemens is very quiet and Cummings keeps barking at him to be louder.
10:50 am - Now Brian McNamee is beginning his statement. He says he injected Pettitte, Clemens and Knoblauch. McNamee is remorseful and not proud to testify against the man he once admired. Brian takes responsibility for his mistakes. McNamee has been well composed so far. McNamee states he told the truth about all three and that two of the three have verified his claims.
Lost the first half of the blogging for this hearing thanks to a great internet connection.

Is this going to be televised somewhere? If so, do you know where?
Brian McNamee’s name says it all. He’s a name dropper; an opportunist, and a RAT FINK. Roger Clemens is clean. I believe Roger Clemens IS telling the truth and is an honorable guy.
Why would Brian McNamee lie? — Because — he’s a LIAR, that’s why!
