Anthony Anderson Replacing Jesse L. Martin on ‘Law & Order’

Jesse L. Martin

Veteran Law & Order actor Jesse L. Martin is leaving the hit NBC show to pursue a career on the big screen.  Martin will be replaced by K-Ville actor Anthony Anderson.

Jesse L. Martin is leaving NBC’s Law & Order after nine years on the show. Sources say his character, Detective Ed Green, will be written off. In the wake of Martin’s departure, Anthony Anderson, star of Fox’s freshman cop drama K-Ville, is in final talks to come on board as a new detective partnered with Jeremy Sisto’s Cyrus Lupo. Martin is expected to shoot one more episode with Anderson stepping in later this season.

The best part of this story is that Martin has signed on to star as Marvin Gaye in a biopic of the life of the late, great R&B star.  Martin bears a strong resemblance to Gaye, as you can see below.

Dammit! Jesse was one of the few remaining L+O actors that I liked.

From the Wikipedia entry on A.A.:

“In 1995, he married his college girlfriend, Alvina Stewart. The couple has two children.

On July 28, 2004, while filming the motion picture Hustle & Flow alongside Terrance Howard, Anderson and crew member Wayne Witherspoon were arrested and charged with raping a female visitor to Anderson’s trailer. The charges were later dismissed, but Anderson was still under suit for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman on the set of All About the Andersons.”

Niiiice. I mean, I’m sure the charges are part of a larger conspiracy to frame this guy, who is undoubtedly a great person and role model. Either way, he’s entertaining me already.

I absolutely love Jesse L Martin as Detective Greene. I wish him success, but he will surely be missed. Next to Jerry Ohrbach, he has been my favorite character.

This may almost be the final step in my migration to NetFlix. Between reality TV (who needs it???) and the writers strike - and factor in all those really STUPID commercials that run 4 times an hour (Originality???), it makes PBS mysteries and DVD movies the way to go. Don’t know who this Anderson fellow is; don’t really care. If it weren’t for internet access, I would likely drop the cable, TV has nothing intellectual or entertaining going for it. Will be satisfied with Law and Order re-runs on TNT or wherever. Of course there’s Monk, The Closer, and Saving Grace so I’m not out of good police shows, yet…

FYI: Have never watched SVU or Criminal Intent… Spin offs are just that… Spin Offs.

As to Law and Order specifically, I am wondering, whatever happened to the Chris Noths’ or George Dzundas, or Benjamin Bratts? I know there will never be another Jerry Orbach - too much to hope for. Sometimes I feel that Sam Waterston gets a little too “actorish” with his courtroom soliloquies; but after “The Great Gatsby”, I have trouble finding lingering fault. I like S. Epatha Merkerson as the lieutenant. And the new ADA is OK. Still, it seems to me that TV in general is too busy playing the equality card instead of going for talent and the best actor for a part regardless. That being the case, Isn’t it time for a hispanic detective???

In your diatribe you missed Benjamin Bratt who was on Law and Order who is Hispanic BTW…..Anthony Anderson is a very good actor -watch his work in The Shield; if you saw his performance you would know just how good he is.

9 years on one show is WAY more than most actors will ever get;But sooner or later actors leave or shows get canceled-that is just the way it is. I wish Jesse L. well in his future projects.
