‘American Idol’ Does the Beatles Again

David Archuleta Dominates

I had more than my dose of the Beatles last week, but the producers of American Idol extended the theme for another week. The overall winner tonight was likely David Archuleta. Others delivering good performances tonight were David Cook, Carly Smithson and Chikezie.

My winners tonight: David Archuleta, David Cook, Carly Smithson, Chikezie

Somewhere in the middle: Amanda Overmyer, Michael Johns, Brooke White, Syesha Mercado

Those in most trouble: Kristy Lee Cook, Jason Castro, Ramiele Malubay

Does anyone else think it’s a coincidence that Sir Paul McCartney finally let Idol do all the Beatles songs at the same time he agreed to pay ex-wife Heather Mills a $50 million dollar settlement? Beatles and Paul McCartney album sales have risen over the past 10 days since Idol contestants performed songs from the Lennon/McCartney catalog last week.

Here is my take on how the contestants did this week.

Amanda Overmyer - “Back In The U.S.S.R.” - I think it is very clear at this point that Amanda can do Southern Rock extremely well. I believe she did a pretty good job with this song, but it was lacking a bit of something. She for sure rocked it though. I agree with Simon that Amanda is becoming a bit ‘boring’. Grade: B-

Kristy Lee Cook - “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” - You can’t help but like Kristy Lee. She is very girl-next-door cute and pretty down to earth to boot. As much as I like her I believe she will again be in the bottom two tomorrow night. It was one of her better performances to date. She has a great personality if that counts. Grade: C

David Archuleta - “The Long And Winding Road” - There is no doubt that David is really good. I am just not sure if he can sing anything besides ballads. It is too bad you can’t morph him and Amanda Overmyer together. He did a great job tonight. He has the most mature voice this season. He is also the most popular contestant. After a small bump last week David is back on top with a majestic performance. Grade: A+

Michael Johns - “A Day In The Life” - The sexiest male in the competition by a few miles (kilometers if you are Canadian). Mike put together a very impressive arrangement of this song considering the length and depth of the original. The second best performance tonight behind David Archuleta so far but that isn’t saying too much just yet. Michael seemed to miss a number of notes. He reminds me a whole lot of Jim Morrison. Grade: B

Brooke White - “Here Comes The Sun” - Brooke might be wining the best makeover award so far in the competition. She is turning into a bit of a sex kitten. Brooke was pretty good tonight. She showed energy and put out a very positive vibe for once. She did look a bit nervous at times but overall a pretty solid performance. I thought she did a good bit better than the judges. Grade: C+

David Cook - “Day Tripper” - David is my favorite rocker in the competition. All apologies to Overmyer. This guy has a future even if he doesn’t win Idol. He might sooner than later need a good hair piece but that’s ok with all the advantages in hair technology. I think he could have rocked this song out a bit more but it was still really strong. Grade: B+

Carly Smithson - “Blackbird” - She seems to be improving every week. I thought she showed a good bit of range on this one. Great song selection, arrangement and performance. But did anyone else see her husband? Homeboy was inked from head to toe….and all over his entire face! Blackbird fly! Grade: A

Jason Castro - “Michelle” - I think Jason takes home the award tonight for worst song selection. This song sounded like one of those Columbia House CD of the Month selections from back in the day when I forgot to send back in the card rejecting it. On a positive note, nice Wranglers! Grade: D

Syesha Mercado - “Yesterday” - She sang the song I couldn’t believe every contestant bypassed last week. Did she really try to pull off the biggest watermelon earrings ever seen on TV? Her performance was very soulful and actually pretty good. She was one of the bottom two last week but did well enough this week to hopefully avoid the elimination pit. Grade: B+

Chikezie - “I’ve Just Seen A Face” - Dude has been slimming up. He broke out the harmonica and took this song to a level that I didn’t imagine when he started. He is becoming the most versatile contestant in the competition. Either the best or second best performance of the night. The song started off a bit slow and then ended up as some fast country roller coaster. Grade: A

Ramiele Malubay - “I Should Have Known Better” - I didn’t like Ramiele’s song selection too much. She seemed to have a few pitch problems. The song seemed to drag on for 10 hours instead of 90 seconds. On a positive note, very nice juicy lips. She is in the danger zone. Grade: F

Or more of a coincidence that all the Beatles songs show up on AI and Neverland Ranch got saved? I thought MJ had the Beatles catalog.
