Vicki Van Meter, who rose to fame in the early 90′s for being the youngest pilot to ever fly across the United States, has died of an apparent suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Van Meter made national headlines in 1993 and 1994 when she made her cross-country and trans-Atlantic flights accompanied only by a flight instructor. Her instructors said she was at the controls during the entirety of both flights.

Van Meter had been battling depression and refused to take her medications according to published reports.

She flew across the United States when she was 11-years-old and across the Atlantic Ocean when she was 12-years-old.
