Dottie Rambo Dies Tragically

Gospel legend Dottie Rambo died tragically early Sunday when her tour bus ran off the road in Missouri. She was on her way to a performance in Texas for Mother’s Day.

Rambo, 74, of Nashville, Tenn., died in the crash about two miles east of Mount Vernon on Interstate 44, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. Seven other people in the bus were injured, and were hospitalized in Springfield with moderate to severe injuries, the patrol said.

It was unclear if the accident, which occurred about 2 a.m., was weather-related, the patrol said. Severe storms and tornadoes hit the region about 6 p.m. Saturday, killing 14 people. Sustained winds and storms swept through the area later in the night, according to the National Weather Service.

Rambo published over 2,500 songs and received countless awards during her lifetime. She was just 74-years-old.

I can’t think of anything that saddens me as much as Sweet Dottie’s passing. She was a giant in the gospel music industry and although it’s heaven’s gain - it is surely our loss. Now she’s ‘teaching angels how to sing’. She will be sorely missed down here. I loved Dottie’s spirit and her songs. My dad thought she was really close to being an angel - now she can seranade him in heaven. Welcome Home, Dottie - but we sure will miss you.

Probably one of the most genuine gospel singers and born-again believers. How she loved Jesus. Her song, “We Shall Behold Him,” is one of my favorite. Now, she is beholding Him, her Savior and Lord. Pray for her daughter, Reba and her family. We’ll miss you but will see you when we behold Him.

I will never forget the time I received a personal letter from Dottie Rambo. I had just graduated from high school in Winfield, Al and was preparing to go to college. The Singing News had an ad for a piano player for a well known group - The Rambos. I sent a recording and Dottie send a nice letter back on personalized stationary. They had already hired someone but she was passing by tape to other groups. I had phone calls from several groups but decided to go on to college at that time. I was able to continue to play gospel music and stayed in touch with many of the gospel greats at that time, but never did play professionally. Many became good friends and the ones who are now gone are missed. Dottie Rambo will be remembered as not only one on the gospel music icons, but a real special friend in my life.

Dottie`s music is my favorite but it was her spirit that hooked me. Her love for the Lord and her passion in her music was captivating. I will love her forever for the many songs that has, more then once, ministered life to my weakened body and sad mind. I know it is Jesus that I feel in her music and I will praise Him forever for using her. Yes, Dottie, You will be missed. I will miss you and pray for your family. I know you are getting your Heavenly reward now. I will look for you in Heaven when I get there. Thank you Jesus for the music you gave us through her. What an amazing blessing she has been over the years. Thank you Dottie for being so obedient to God. Wow!! I love you.
