Vote: Oklahoma City’s NBA Team Nickname

Oklahoma City NBA Team Nickname Contest
Name OKC’s Team

The good people in Oklahoma City are still trying to decide what to call their soon to be arriving NBA team from Seattle. It is a foregone conclusion that the Seattle Sonics will not be called the Sonics in oil rig country.

The final four names being considered in a newspaper contest are the Barons, Thunderbirds, Thunder, and Outlaws (my personal favorite).

Imagine an Oklahoma City Outlaws roster consisting of Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, Allen Iverson, Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby, Zach Randolph, Rasheed Wallace, Kobe Bryant and Gilbert Arenas.

That would be a pretty tough team to beat. And if the Wizards were still the Bullets then we could have the Sunday afternoon game of the week between the Washington Bullets and the Oklahoma City Outlaw. Truly classic NBA!

I also think they should not use ‘City’ in the name of their name. Sounds a lot better nationally to be the Oklahoma Barons, Oklahoma Outlaws, etc.

Vote below for what you would call the team:

Oklahoma Outlaws!!! Classic. In classic bump fashion I loved the commentary about the roster. I was thinking the same thing. Add OJ May to the list.

yes that was a bash to an ’sc player from me.

You’re absolutely wrong on both issues.

First off, this team is Oklahoma City, not Oklahoma. It’s a great city, and the idea that the city is big league is supported by that being the team name. Changing the Oklahoma City 89ers to Oklahoma Redhawks was a bad idea, and being “Oklahoma City” never caused people outside The City to support the team any less than people in Plano don’t support the Dallas Cowboys.

Secondly, there’s absolutely no reason whatsoever to dream up a new name. The team has a name, a legacy, a logo, a uniform…it’s the SuperSonics. That’s should be the team’s name, the Oklahoma City SuperSonics. I’m sure there are fans in Seattle disappointed the team is moving, but it’s better that your team is somewhere else than it’s totally destroyed. I rooted for the Houston Oilers, and would have rooted for them in Tennessee, but they gutted the history of the team and insulted the fans by pretending it was a new team instead of keeping the history and legacy of the Oilers.

Just as we have Los Angeles Dodgers which are still the Dodgers of Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn “Bums” the Sonics in Oklahoma will still have that great history. They should respect that, then start towards adding to it rather than just starting over again and throwing the history of the Sonics in the trash or, worse still, giving an expansion team that name and pretending they are the Sonics, like this sham with the Cleveland Browns pretending to be the team of Jim Brown, which they are not.

Looks like you are wrong Cowboy. The name and colors will be staying in Seattle.

I’d say its still up in the air whether they will be called Oklahoma _____ or Oklahoma City __________.

Yes I also believe that Oklahoma City Super Sonics would be great. I believe in keeping the history and isnt that what oklahoma is all about. It’s great history!! If we were starting our own team then yes a new name like the oklahoma city outlaws or maybe the oklahoma city buffalos but since we are just moving a team, then it should stay the same. Besides OKCSS would look good for logo items also.

I know I’m in the minority but I like the name Thunder, is symbolizes the area’s weather as well as its courage. It also reminds us of the reason we got a team in the first place, due to the terrible Hurricane Katrina. Because of that storm, we provided the NBA a temporary shelter and proved our worth. Now that we finally get a team of our own, we can let the Thunder roll and know we can weather whatever the NBA teams throw at us.

I’d go with either the Oklahoma City Tornadoes or the Oklahoma City Wifebeaters (with black and white vertical stripes on the jerseys)
The four years I lived there it seemd like one of those two things was the lead story on the news every night.
Seattle was the SuperSonics because of the Boeing plant there. I guess OKC could be the Cropdusters or the Bugsmashers, since that’s about all Oklahoma has to offer aviation-wise.

I would go with the name of the Oklahoma City Copperheads. With the jerseys being black or white w/ cooper color stripes and red. Mascot (Cooperhead Snake)

    Oklahoma City Rush

    Maroon and Gold Colors.

Has more meaning to your state’s history. ….and most sports teams try to go with SHORTER names. ;-)

    Greg in MT/ID | July 3rd, 2008 14:09

I agree with Chris on the shorter names, which is why Oklahoma City Thunderbirds should NOT be the name. Oklahoma Thunderbirds is maybe okay — but seven syllables is still a mouthful. The too-many-syllables thing is also why I strongly prefer Oklahoma as the team name … Oklahoma City just contains too many letters and too many syllables, both. I’m also not a big fan of the 80s fad of using singular nouns for teams’ nicknames. Thus … I ultimately vote for either the Oklahoma Barons or, better yet, the Oklahoma Outlaws. Oklahoma Oilers isn’t bad, either … but it’s obviously not even on the list.

Joe Dirt dont know Oklahoma, and definitely does not know aviation. Tinker Air Force base supplies the AWACS. Which are the premier air battle command and control aircraft in the world. My vote would be for Oklahoma Thunder. Can you imagine the sound effects in the “Ford Center”. Oh yeah. Maybe with a little help from Garth….Thunder rolls.

Major league team nicknames should end in “S”. Not this minor league crap….Thunder….Fury. C’mon. I know it’s been done but it sounds stupid. Outlaws is good because it starts with an “O”. It flows out nicely. Maybe the league could re-align and you could start a nice rivalry with the Mavericks. Mavericks vs Outlaws. Anyone?

Lived in Oklahoma my whole life and am pumped about the new team. As far as names go I really hope “Barons” wins out. It’s original, and ties in with the states history (Oil Barons) in a way that doesn’t invlove cowboys and indians.

I was thinkin the Oklahoma City : “Tribe” due to the fact that over 67 native american tribes are apart of the great city, or the “Calvary” maybe even the “Airmen” due to Tinker Airforce Base or even the Bison!! I just hope they have a better year than last year. (they just might due to a better crowd)

OKLAHOMA CITY OILERS. There are many colors out there but I like baby blue with the name in white outlined with red. The logo could be an oil rig with OKC below it and a basketball in the background. There can be many possibilities but I love the name.

I like “Oklahoma City Six Shooters” An old west theme. The stupid “Wizards” got rid of one of the classic NBA names in Bullets because they felt it was too violent… NONSENSE I SAY. Why is Bullets bad, yet a name with ties to the Occult is okay??? So don’t come at me with any too violent cries.

Oklahoma Outlaws is an old USFL team… They shouldn’t go with that. “Thunder” is too 1990’s ala All the teams that came out without an “S” on the end of their name.

Someone suggested “Lighthorse” on another site.

    Wikipedia defines Lighthorse this way:

Lighthorse (or Light Horse) was the name given by the Five Civilized Tribes of the United States to their mounted police force. The Lighthorse were generally organized into companies and assigned to different districts. Perhaps the most famous were the Cherokee Lighthorsemen which had their origins in Georgia. Although the mounted police were disbanded when the Five Civilized Tribes lost their tribal lands in the late 19th century, some tribes still use the Lighthorse name for elements of their police forces.

i can really see kevin durant and russell westbrook in a black, gold, white jersey that says Oklahoma city outlaws then it sayin anything esle. really who would wanna be a thunderbird or baron unstead of a outlaw. outlaws r way cooler. i would never buy a jersey or wear a jersey that says thunderbirds or baron. And i dont think kevin durant or russell westbrook would too and if i was the owner of that team i would try my best to keep them on my team cuz their the best without them the owner will never make any money in oklahoma. Sayin oklahoma city outlaws sounds way better then saying oklahoma city thunderbirds or barons. im not from oklahoma but i agree they shouldn’t be the oklahoma city bomber, who would want they team to be named after a event that killed people. i can really see future basketball players saying “i wanna be a outlaw when i get drafted.” And for every1 who says the name oklahoma city thunder is cool just becuz it would be cool to have a wnba name on a nba team, no it wouldn’t be cool it’ll be dumb. im a fan of kevin durant an russell westbrook and i would hate to see them wear something saying oklahoma city thunderbirds or barons. Hey, check out this site if u wanna vote for the new name urself http://bumpshack.com/2008/05/14/vote-oklahoma-citys-nba-team-nickname/

I don’t think it will be anything having to do with bombing. That is just a bit morbid considering what took place. I mean if you name your team the ‘Bombers’ does the mascot in blue jeans ride out in a rented Ryder truck? It just would never fly. Also I dont see it being named after anything having to do with Indians because ‘Native Americans’ get so offended now that many college teams are changing their mascots and protesters have even tried to get the Cleveland Indians to change their name.

I think it is going to be the Outlaws or Thunder. Being a NBA team I do believe it needs to have an (s) at the end of it. So I would still go with Outlaws. It seems to far and away be the leading candidate.
