EliteXC fighter James ‘Colossus’ Thompson entered the ring on Saturday night against Kimbo Slice with what is referred to as a cauliflower ear. Kimbo, who was in trouble throughout the match, beat at the ear until it exploded in the third round and the ref called the fight in favor of Kimbo.

Cauliflower Ear according to Wikipedia:

Cauliflower Ear is a condition most common among wrestlers, rugby players, mixed martial artists, and boxers. If the external portion of the ear suffers a blow, a blood clot or other fluid may collect under the perichondrium. This separates the cartilage from the overlying perichondrium that is its source of nutrients, causing the cartilage to die. This leads to a formation of fibrous tissue in the overlying skin. When this happens, the outer ear becomes permanently swollen and deformed, thus resembling a cauliflower.

Thompson came into the fight with the Cauliflower Ear. It didn’t happen during the fight, but Slice focused in on it in the third round and punched at it hard until it exploded, almost ripping the entire ear off. Thompson needs to have it fixed if he wants to continue to be a successful MMA fighter.
