Tiger Woods hit a dramatic putt on the 18th hole yesterday at Torrey Pines to set up today’s playoff round of 18 holes between Woods and Rocco Mediate, the 158th ranked golfer in the world. I know many are at work and away from a TV this morning so I am going to do my best job to live blog the round hole-by-hole right here.

The round starts at 12:00pm EST/9:00am PST (tee time) on ESPN then moves to NBC after the first two hours.

Play-by-Play

Hole 1 - Tiger: Gets a nice bounce from the rough out into the fairway on his opening drive. Second shot onto the green about 35 feet away. Misses first putt and taps in from just a few feet out for par. Tiger hits the easy putt for PAR. Rocco: Impressive drive to start off the playoff round. Second shot into the sand. Two putt and a BOGEY.

Hole 2 - Tiger: Tees off into the rough. Second shot into a bit of deep rough just short of the green. Tiger’s chip leaves his ball outside of Rocco’s. Connects for PAR. Rocco: Just off the fairway with a good angle for the next shot. Second shot far right and short of the green. Very nice chip to within about 6 feet of the pin. Rocco sweating bullets taps in for PAR.

Hole 3 - Tiger: Tees off into the sand in a very difficult spot. Good second shot considering the lie putting him about 11 feet from the pin. Tiger misses the 11-footer. TW putts in from 3 feet for BOGEY. Rocco: WOW! Rocco just missed a hole-in-one by an inch. His second shot will be from about a foot away and he nails it for a BIRDIE

Hole 4 - Tiger: Tees off into the rough as well right behind Rocco. Horrible second shot by Woods into the rough again. Beautiful chip by TW to about 18 inches from the pin. Tap in for PAR. Rocco: Tees into the rough but with a decent lie. Nice second shot onto the green several dozen feet from the flag. Solid putt to put him within 3 feet for par and the tip in for PAR. Connects for PAR.

Hole 5 - Tiger: Great start right down the alleyway on the drive. Decent second shot onto the green. Misses shot for birdie. Three foot putt for PAR. Rocco: Bad drive for RM into the sand. Ouch! Rocco hits the cart path twice and it bounces half way back to Los Angeles. Extremely nice save for Rocky on shot #3. Just short on the putt and RM will have to settle for a BOGEY.

Hole 6 - Tiger: Great long drive right down Broadway. Beautiful second shot by Tiger just short of the flag. Tiger putts in for a BIRDIE. Rocco: Very nice drive down the center of the fairway. Second too far to the right and deep as it rolls off the back of the green. Sneaky chip that finds momentum on the green and puts Rocco a few feet away. Very nice putt by Rocco for PAR.

Hole 7 - Tiger: TW’s driver is really starting to heat up as he hits a beautiful shot deep down the fairway. Very nice #2 shot that is going to give Tiger an excellent chance at a birdie. Zinger putt that Tiger nails for BIRDIE. Rocco: Solid drive into the light rough right next to the fairway. Decent follow up shot that lands on the green about 40 feet from the hole. Misses a birdie when his long putt comes inches short of the hole. Tap in for PAR.

Hole 8 - Tiger: Bad shot by Tiger as he hits it too hard and bounces it off the green into the sand behind the green. Way too much club on the drive by TW. Pretty bad chip for Tiger that puts him right next to Rocco’s first shot. Copycat chip to Rocco’s that puts TW about 4 feet out as well. Putt in for BOGEY. Rocco: Decent but not great shot by Rocco. He is in good position to pick up a stroke on this hole. Chip puts RM about 3.5 feet away from the flag. Rocco makes it for PAR.

Hole 9 - Tiger: Great drive by Tiger but he grimaces in pain from his knee after the follow through. Equally bad shot by Tiger into the sand. OUCH! Tiger didn’t get it high enough and hit it from sand pit to sand pit. Tiger putts in for and saves PAR. Rocco: Real pretty drive down the middle to start this par 5. Second shot off the fairway and into the high grass. Shot out of the rough is too hard and past the pin but still on the green. Mediate misses short putt for par and settles for BOGEY.

PAR 35: Woods 35 - Mediate 37 after the front nine.

Hole 10 - Tiger: Bad drive by Woods to start the back nine as he hits it into the deep rough. Nice shot but with too much spin that spins it off near the flag back off the green. WOW! Amazing putt by Tiger that finds the bottom of the hole after nearly lipping out to save PAR. Rocco: Very nice by RM straight down the fairway. He needs a good hole after botching an easy putt on #9. Leaves the second shot just short of the green. Flat chip that won’t help Rocco catch Tiger on this hole. Rocco misses putt long and double putts for a BOGEY.

Hole 11 - Tiger: Starts the par 3 by knocking it into the sand. Tiger’s chip from the sand puts his ball next to Rocco’s initial drive. Tiger misses the putt and settles for his third BOGEY. Rocco: The crowd is trying to rally Rocco as he is in trouble. Beautiful shot onto the green. Misses long putt and tapes in for PAR.

Hole 12 - Tiger: Not so good drive as it finds the fairway bunker. Back-to-back bad shots by TW as he is into the fairway rough again and a good bit short of the green. Chip to the green leaves the ball a good distance short of the hole. Tiger can’t connect on his first putt from the green. Woods hits a 3 foot putt for BOGEY. Rocco: Pretty good drive down the fairway as Rocco is starting to calm back down and find a decent rhythm. Extremely nice and powerful shot by Rocco onto the green that could set him up to gain another shot on Woods. RM misses a 13 foot putt. Rocco makes 4 foot putt for PAR.

Hole 13 - Tiger: Nails the drive 15 yards into the rough. Excellent second shot onto the green about 55 feet from the flag. Great putt by Woods that puts him just a couple of feet from making it. Tiger taps in for BIRDIE. Rocco: Hits the fairway on the drive just near the fringe of the rough. RM hits the bunker just a couple of yards short of the green. Decent chip out of the sand but to the left of the hole. Very nice made putt for BIRDIE.

Hole 14 - Tiger: Pretty solid drive but to the right of Rocco’s. Not the best chip from TW but he is still reasonably close to the hole for his upcoming putt. Tiger hits a pretty putt that just lips out and gives him PAR. Rocco: Excellent drive by Rocco. He hit it about as well as he could have with the club he used. Great chip by Rocco that will leave him a tap in that he makes for BIRDIE.

Hole 15 - Tiger: He drives it outside the ropes and into the gallery. Perhaps the shot of the day as he hits it just feet from the hole in front of Rocco’s ball. Tiger misses a very makable putt and has to settle for PAR. Rocco: He gets a nice kick back into the fairway as he continues his hot streak over the past four holes. Rocco continues the pressure as he nails it onto the green, right of the flag. WOW! Rocco hits a Tigeresque putt from about 20 feet for BIRDIE.

THREE HOLES TO GO

Hole 16 - Tiger: TW hits his drive just a bit further than RM and onto the green. He just about did it again from about 30 yards as the putt finished less than an inch from going in. He taps it in for PAR. Rocco: Leads off 16 with a drive that comes up a bit short of the green on this par 3. Rocco uses the putter from just off the green and he just about hits it all the way in. He is in great shape to par this hole. He knocks it in for PAR.

Hole 17 - Tiger: Very straight and down the middle as he needs to make up a stroke on this hole or the next to send it into sudden death overtime. Tiger’s second shot is onto the green and has him in good shape. Tiger leaves his makable putt just to the left of the hole. He taps in for PAR. Rocco: A good enough drive from Mediate to start this par 4. Rocco gets it onto the green but is going to have a very long putt to set up a second putt for par. Very nice distant putt to put Rocco in position for a 3 foot or so par. Rocco nails it for PAR and goes into the 18th hole with the lead.

Hole 18 (Par 5: Tiger 4 - Rocco 5) - Tiger: He nails the middle of the fairway and is on Rocco’s heals. Woods knocks shot #2 safely onto the green. The pressure is now on Mediate. Strong putt that doesn’t really come too close. Tiger still has a great chance to send this to double overtime. Tiger putts in from 4 feet out for a BIRDIE. Rocco: He pulled it into the fairway bunker on the drive. Rocco has opened the door for Tiger to come from behind and win. Rocco’s second shot is into the middle of the fairway. Very solid third shot that could turn into a makable and the victory although it will be very tough from the distance. Rocco misses and leaves himself a slightly difficult shot for par. He is going to be sweating pretty hard to make it and send it to sudden death. Rocco makes it for PAR.

SUDDEN DEATH

Hole 7 (Par 4) - Tiger: Strong drive by Tiger that cut the corner with the ball landing just on the fairway. Great second shot by Tiger onto the green. Tiger putting for birdie and the win comes up just short. He will tap in for PAR. Rocco: He went left and hit it into the fairway bunker up against the lip. Rocco is choking as he hits his second shot up into the grandstands. Rocco takes a drop and hits a pretty decent chip onto the green. Rocco has a difficult putt to make to continue his dream. Rocco comes close but misses the putt and loses the Open.

TIGER WOODS WINS SUDDEN DEATH and the 2008 U.S. OPEN.
