Movies Opening Today (June 27, 2008)

Movies: WALL-E

WALL-E - (G) What if mankind had to leave Earth, and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? Wall-E, spends every day doing what he was made for. But soon, he will discover what he was meant for, as he adventures across the galaxy chasing his dream.

Wanted - (R) 25-year-old Wes was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox. After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad’s death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors–including the Fraternity’s enigmatic leader, Sloan–Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.

Finding Amanda - (R) Taylor Peters is a television writer and producer working on a low-rated, little-respected half-hour sitcom. Taylor was probably destined for better things, but his compulsive gambling, recreational drug use and drinking problem (now under control) all conspired to throw his career off the rails several years back. Now all he does is play the horses, but does his best to keep his wife Lorraine in the dark about it. Unexpectedly, Taylor and Lorraine are called to Lorraine’s sister’s house to deal with a family emergency: Taylor’s twenty-year-old niece Amanda is living in Las Vegas where, it’s been recently discovered, she’s working as a prostitute. On their way home, Lorraine finds racing stubs in the glove compartment, and decides to leave Taylor. Lorraine decides not to come home. Taylor comes up with a plan: he’ll win back his wife’s affections and trust by going to Las Vegas, finding Amanda and delivering her to rehab in Malibu. And while he’s there, he vows, he won’t gamble a cent. Alas, the best laid plans.

Gunnin’ for That #1 Spot - (PG-13) Directed by Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, the documentary follows eight of the country’s premiere high school basketball players as they play on the worldâ¿¿s most famous outdoor court: Rucker Park in Harlem–a place where nicknames are branded and legends are made. Blending this next generation of b-ball players with a mix of raw hip-hop, jazz and break beats gives a kinetic look at soon-to-be NBA All Stars.

Trumbo - (PG-13) Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo’s remarkable journey from Hollywood royalty to blacklisted writer to Academy Award winner is told through the writer’s own indelible words. Combined are performances of some of his extraordinary letters, clips from his films and archival and contemporary interviews with those who knew him best, which illustrate how one man’s unerring belief in the First Amendment and the power of the written word–plus a drink or two–empowered him to fight back after being blacklisted by HUAC.
