Billy Powell, the keyboardist for southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, has passed away at the age of 56 according to a message posted on the band’s website.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Powell family. Surely he is up in a place just as good as his ‘Sweet Home Alabama.’

Having grown up in the south I know of the importance of Lynyrd Skynyrd in the music world and beyond.  Skynyrd is the most popular rock band to ever come out of the south.
