Movies Opening Today (January 30, 2009)

Movies: Taken Poster

Taken - (PG-13) A former government operative comes out of retirement and uses his extensive training to rescue his daughter from a slave trade operation.

New In Town - (PG) A Miami businesswoman is transferred to rural Minnesota, and while she is there she re-evaluates her big-city values.

Uninvited - (PG-13) Anna returns home after spending time in the hospital following the tragic death of her mother. Her recovery suffers a setback when she discovers her father has become engaged to her mother’s former nurse. That night, Anna is visited by her mother’s ghost, who warns her of Rachel’s intentions. Together, Anna and her sister try to convince their father that his current fiancée is not who she pretends to be, and what should have been a happy family reunion becomes a lethal battle of wills between stepdaughters and stepmother.

Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh - (NR) Hannah Senesh, a World War II-era poet and diarist, became a paratrooper, resistance fighter and modern-day Joan of Arc. Safe in Palestine in 1944, Hannah joined a mission to rescue Jews in her native Hungary. Shockingly, it was the only military rescue mission for Jews during the Holocaust. Hannah parachuted behind enemy lines, was captured, tortured and ultimately executed by the Nazis. Incredibly, her mother Catherine witnessed the entire ordeal–first as a prisoner with Hannah and later as her advocate, braving the bombed-out streets of Budapest in a desperate attempt to save her daughter.

The Class - (PG-13) Based on an autobiographical novel by Francois Begaudeau, a drama that follows the year in the life of a French schoolteacher working at a high-school in a tough neighborhood of Paris. Ethnicities, cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom. As amusing and inspiring as the teenage students can be, their difficult behavior can still jeopardize any teacher’s enthusiasm for the low-paying job. Francois insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods.

Serbis - (R) The Pineda family lives in and operates a run-down theater which shows dated porno double-features. The matriarch Nanay Flor, her daughter Nayda, son-in-law Lando and adopted daughter Jewel take turns manning the ticket booth and canteen. Her nephews Alan and Ronald are respectively the billboard painter and projectionist. As the various members of the family go about their daily activities, we get a glimpse of how they suffer and deal with each other’s sins and vices.
