Supreme Court Justice David Souter Announces Retirement

David Souter

United States Supreme Court Justice David Souter has announced that he will be retiring from the Nation’s highest court at the end of the current court term.

At 69, Souter is nowhere near the oldest member of the court. In fact, he is in the younger half of the court’s age range, with five justices older and just three younger. So far as anyone knows, he is in good health. But he has made clear to friends for some time that he wanted to leave Washington, a city he has never liked, and return to his native New Hampshire. Now, according to reliable sources, he has decided to take the plunge and has informed the White House of his decision.

Many legal experts expect President Barack Obama to select a female to fill Souter’s position since there is currently just one, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, on the Supreme Court.

Possible nominees who have been mentioned as being on a theoretical short list include Elena Kagan, the current solicitor general who represents the government before the Supreme Court; Sonia Sotomayor, a Hispanic judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; and Diane Wood, a federal judge in Chicago who taught at the University of Chicago at the same time future President Barack Obama was teaching constitutional law there.

The current members of the Supreme Court are Chief Justice John Roberts, John Paul Stevens, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, David Souter, Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Stephen Breyer, and Samuel Alito.

Obama Staff Member Suspected of Having Swine Flu

A member of President Barack Obama’s administration is suspected of having the Swine Flu after returning from a recent trip to Mexico according to a CNN ticker flash.

No word yet if the individual is a cabinet member.

So far there has been over 100 cases reported in the United States.

‘Top Gun’ Star Kelly McGillis Comes Out of the Cockpit

Top Gun Actress Kelly McGillis

Actress Kelly McGillis, who rose to fame as the sexy female flying instructor in Top Gun, has come out of the cockpit to finally put to rest rumors that she is gay, by announcing that she is in fact a lesbian, after several failed marriages.

Kelly McGillis told the Internet show Girl Rock! that she was single, and in the market for a female partner.

“Definitely a woman,” she said when asked if she’s looking for a man or a woman. “I’m done with the man thing. You need to move on in life.”

McGillis, 51, has been married and divorced twice, and has two daughters with her second husband, Fred Tillman.

The actress went on to say that it is something she has been struggling with since she was a pre-teen.

The actress said coming out as a lesbian was “an ongoing process from the time I was probably 12.”

She added that “I had a lot of things happen that convinced me that God was punishing me because I was gay.” McGillis was attacked and raped in her apartment in 1982 when she was a young actress working in New York.

McGillis went on to say that she has been offered some two-bit parts of late but refuses to dye her gray hair for the roles.

Kelly can live her life how she wants, but her decision won’t change my fantasies while watching her in Top Gun.

Matt Giraud Ratted Off ‘American Idol’

Matt Giraud Voted Off American Idol

Tonight was the end of the road for Matt Giraud on American Idol as he was ratted off the reality singing contest.  Danny Gokey and Allison Iraheta were the first two sent to safety. This left a big surprise with Adam Lambert in the bottom three.

Natalie Cole performed ‘Somethings Gotta Give’ to a mixed response.  She was followed by former Idol winner Taylor Hicks who sang ‘Seven Mile Breakdown’ from his new album.

Bottom Three: Kris Allen, Matt Giraud, Adam Lambert

Kris Allen was the first contestant sent to safety, which meant that Matt and Adam were the two lowest vote getters for the week.

Before we found out that Matt was eliminated we were treated to one of the worst lip sync performances of all-time by Jamie Foxx.  Foxx didn’t even half way attempt to sing and the performance made it pretty clear how manufactored a lot of songs are that are released and make it into the top ten today.

ELIMINATED: Matt Giraud

This leaves Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen, and Adam Lambert as the Idol Final Four.

Live Blog: Final Five Form ‘Idol’ Rat Pack

The final five compete tonight on American Idol singing songs from the Rat Pack.  The music mentor to guide the contestants this week was actor/singer Jamie Foxx.  Yes, the Jamie Foxx that told Miley Cyrus to make a sex tape and get some heroin on his radio show just last week.  For some reason the Idol producers thought he would be a good guy to be giving advice to fellow 16-year old Allison Iraheta this week.

Kris Allen – ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ – Still cracking up about Foxx’s comment about Allen not being a contestant for the ‘throat Olympics.’  Kris came on a bit nervous tonight, which might be naturally leading off, but he found his stride and warmed up as the beat sped up.  He showed that he is a very smooth singer and can be diverse when he needs to be.  A pretty safe and solid performance from Kris.  Grade: A-

Allison Iraheta – ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ – It would be nice to see Allison with dark hair and not the Strawberry Shortcake red.  Ken Stewart said on his Facebook tonight that Allison reminded him of a high school version of Rachel Ray and I think he is spot on with that.  Let me just be clear, Allison is the best female remaining in the competition.  She was good tonight and is always more mature while singing than being interviewed.  I do think Simon was trying to dictate the results tomorrow night with his negative feedback on Iraheta after the rest of the judges praised her.  Grade: B+

Matt Giraud – ‘My Funny Valentine’ – After watching Jamie Foxx mentor Matt I am reminded once again what a tool Foxx is as a human being.  I have only heard story after story of him being a total jerk in person.  Ok, so onto Matt!  I hated his rough graveled-gravel voice to start out.  He sounded horrible.  But Matt really showed off his range with a nice finish.  He should be proud, he has made it all the way to the final five remaining, but I do think he could be going home tomorrow night.  Grade: A

Danny Gokey – ‘Come Rain or Come Shine’ – Dan was very solid yet again this week. Like I said last week, he is always really good but not great or horrible. He is always like a B+ which is what will get you this far.  Tonight I thought he was giving another one of these performances until he got to the end of the song and he really added some jazz and spice to his performance.  He is not going to win this season, but he has a real good shot at the finals.  Grade: A

Adam Lambert - ‘Feeling Good’ – Lambert once again had the coveted final spot of the show. He also seems to have more cameras on him and a better stage set up and entrance.  Tonight was no exception as Elvira Presley came prancing down the lit up Idol staircase.  He held nothing back tonight as the Queen was in her full glow.  He was great once again.  Elvira was captivating, entertaining, and the show man he has trained his entire life to be.  He is over theatrical but that is who he is.  I also saw Flat Stanley was in the crowd to support Adam.  Grade: A+

Best of the Night: Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey, Matt Giraud

Good But Not Great:  Kris Allen, Allison Iraheta

Bottom Two Tomorrow Night: Matt Giraud, Allison Iraheta

Elimination Prediction: Matt Giraud

Top 10 ‘Idol’ Downloads on iTunes Leaked (List)

American Idol Rat Pack Night

A glitch at iTunes briefly showed us just which contestants on this season of American Idol are selling the best at the Apple online music store.

Idol favorite Adam Lambert has six songs in the top ten, including the number one song ‘Mad World.’  Kris Allen also has multiple spots with three and the remaining spot goes to Danny Gokey’s version of ‘Endless Love.’

After scouring several sites this is the best I could do in putting the list together.  If someone has the name of the songs Lambert has on the list at numbers 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 then please leave a comment with those, and I will try to update this post a bit later.

Top 10 Idol Selling Contestants on iTunes

  1. ‘Mad World’ – Adam Lambert

  8. ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ – Kris Allen

Yankees Cut Premium Seat Prices by 50%

Yankee Stadium Empty Seats

The New York Yankees and the pride of managing partner Hal Steinbrenner took a bit of a hit today when they announced they were cutting prices for most of their premium seating tickets, around home plate and the dugouts, by 50% in most circumstances.

The team on Tuesday slashed the price of 48 first-row Legends Suite season seats on the outer half of the dugouts and photo cages from $2,500 to $1,250, and 68 others in the final three sections down each foul line from $1,000 to $650.

“There are a few hundred suite seats in our premium locations that have not been sold on a full season basis,” Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement. “As a result, and for many of our fans who have already purchased full season suite seats in such premium locations, the Yankees are announcing today a program that adjusts certain prices and benefits.”

The move comes after several home Yankees games where there was hardly anyone sitting behind the plate and dugouts due to the exhorbiant ticket prices.  Other sections of the new ballpark have been sold out on a regular basis.

The rough economy is causing a slow down at almost every stadium turnstile in MLB with a few exceptions.

Arlen Specter Ditches Republican Party for Democrats

Pennsylvania GOP Senator Arlen Specter, in a sleazy way to get re-elected next year, is switching to the Democratic party.  Specter has been a Republican senator from the Keystone state for over 28 years.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday Obama will raise money and campaign for Specter if asked.

Despite winning election to the Senate five times as a Republican, Specter has jumped ship faced with the prospect of a strong challenge from conservative Pat Toomey in the GOP primary and Pennsylvania trending Democratic.

“I have found myself increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy and more in line with the philosophy of the Democratic Party,” he said at a news conference, adding “I am not prepared to have my 29 years’ record in the United States Senate decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate.”

The move likely will be the final nail into the death of Specter’s controversial political career once his current term is up.  Specter was already trailing Pat Toomey in the GOP primary in PA and the move is similar to switching teams at half time in an attempt for playing time and to win.

I think the move will backfire as long time Democratic residents of PA have despised Specter for years and the Republican voters are going to hate Specter with a passion now.  Regardless of party, Specter, like many in Washington, has been in power too long, and it is time for him to leave the scene of his crimes.
