The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien Debut (Video)
Conan O’Brien kicked off his “Tonight Show” adventure with a run across the country, from New York to Los Angeles, as “Move to L.A.” was the last item on his to-do list (watch video above). Conan’s sidekick Andy Richter and Max Weinberg continues as his favorite band leader.
“I’ve timed this moment perfectly,” O’Brien deadpanned in his opening monologue. “I’m on a last-place network, I moved to a state that’s bankrupt, and tonight’s show is sponsored by General Motors.”
Conan is back! He was a bit nervous. It is not easy to replace such a legendary host like Jay Leno, who has been hosting “The Tonight Show” for seventeen years. Conan became the fifth host of the infamous talk show after Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Jay Leno.
“I remember watching Johnny Carson when I was a kid and thinking: That’s what I want to be when I grow up,” O’Brien said. “I’m sure right now in America there is likely a kid watching me, thinking: ‘What is wrong with that man’s hair?’”
The first guest Will Ferrell was nothing but nice to the new host offering him tips for L.A. living, including a good burger joint in Pasadena “called Burger King” and singing his own version of “Never Can Say Goodbye”. The real musical guest was Pearl Jam debuting a new song from their upcoming album “Backspacer” (watch video here).

Unfortunately, Conan lived up to my expectations, but dashed my hopes. The hope was that he would realize that the Tonight Show audience is a different audience than his previous one. Simply said, that difference is maturity. Conan’s new persona as Tonight Show host gave no hint that he had any clue about the difference. He was just as insipidly silly as he previously was and just as undeservedly self-reverential/referential as he previously was. He apparently hasn’t learned a thing from years of watching Carson and Leno.
Oh well, I guess it is time to turn back to Letterman who was a distant third to Carson and Leno. However, Dave is a far better choice than Conan.
I do hope that NBC has someone in mind to take Conan’s place. They are going to need it with months when their stats crash.
