Gymnast Courtney Kupets Is Top Female College Athlete (Photos)
The 22 year-old gymnast Courtney Kupets was presented with the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is given to the nation’s top female college athlete, by the hands of softball star Lisa Fernandez at Columbia University on Monday (June 22).
Courtney was the first gymnast to win a national title in the all-around, bars, beam and floor competition in the same year. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Kupets won the silver medal in the team all-around and captured individual bronze in the uneven bars.
Since the Olympics, Kupet was accepted to the University of Georgia on full athletic scholarship. Her team won the 2006 NCAA National Championships. After missing the 2008 postseason with an Achilles’ injury, Kupets returned to lead Georgia to its fifth straight NCAA championship.
