My Vintage 80’s Michael Jackson Dolls
I have had these vintage 80’s Michael Jackson dolls for several years now. When MJ passed two weeks ago I dug them out of a box in the garage. I also had one (out of the box) when I was a small kid. I also found the ‘Thriller’ record and thought I would include it in the photos as well.
One of the MJ dolls is wearing the ‘American Music Awards’ outfit and the other has him in his ‘Beat It’ costume.
The big mystery between the two dolls is the photo of Jackson that appears in the bottom left hand corner on each doll’s box. On one of the dolls you can see that Jackson is clearly darker and with a bit of a 5 o’clock shadow. On the other doll MJ is clearly freshly shaved airbrushed and magically lighter (see comparison below). His hair is also not as unkempt.
The dolls were produced before the days of Photoshop, so I assume that a batch was released, and then a second edition/batch was released, with the airbrushed photo instead of the original darker/hairer image. I have examined each closely and it is the same photo on both, just one has been heavily altered.
I checked on eBay last week and these dolls were going for anywhere in between $300-$800 dollars. I believe I paid about $15 bucks each about six years ago. I will be keeping them unless you can bowl me over with an offer. The dolls were produced in the mid-80’s.
