Jessica Simpson’s Indian Giver Controversy!
Singer Jessica Simpson, who recently broke up with her boyfriend Tony Romo, said she was not an “Indian giver” when asked if she would be taking back the fancy boat she gave him just a couple of weeks before the split.
This comment caused outrage amongst Native Americans because it was used in a derogatory manner as a stereotype of Native people as ones who give and then take back. Jacqueline L. Pata, executive director of the National Congress of American Indians, considers this is “a good chance to educate people not to stereotype Native Americans by using a comment this is both incorrect in the way most people use it, and culturally insensitive to Native people.”
Jessica and her sister Ashlee Simpson were out on a girls’ dinner date last night. When questioned about the incident, Jess retorted “I am Indian, alright?” That is the lamest apology we have ever heard. Tony is now enjoying his new boat with girl toy Natalie Smith (photos here)!
