Band Lit founder/drummer Allen Shellenberger has died on Thursday (August 14) at the age of 39 after a long battle with brain cancer. Allen had found out he had a malignant glioma brain tumor last year and had been trying different procedures like clinical trials, chemotherapy, and radiation.

In a statement from Kevin Baldes, Jeremy Popoff, and A.Jay Popoff, the band had this to say of their longtime friend Allen:

“To know Al was to know laughter. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. Words cannot begin to express how much he will be missed. This was our brother and not a day will go by that we won’t think about him. Right now we’re trying to find the balance of mourning his loss and celebrating his life. Allen has experienced more in his 39 years than most people dream of in ten lifetimes. This is a tremendous loss for us, our fans, and also for Allen’s family who took such good care of him during his battle with cancer.”

Allen is survived by his parents and daughter Giovanna Mackey. R.I.P. Allen Shellenberger!

From late ‘90 to ‘93 I crew with Lit in there Hollywood days, when they were called “Razzle”. I used to be Allens drum tech back then. Hell he even sold me my first drum set, how I loved that old kit. Knowing him and the way he was makes it that much harder to hear of his passing. He was a good friend and a great guy, and like its been said about him, he was the most down to earth of all the guys. Always smilling, always happy. And that is how I will remember my friend.
