Top 10 Scandals Miley Cyrus Should Have Avoided
- Vanity Fair Photo Shoot with Billy Ray - This photo shoot ended up turning into a mini-scandal and in the end major publicity for Miley and her dad Billy Ray Cyrus. The shoot was done by famed fashion photographer Annie Leibovitz. The controversy came from Miley appearing topless in the shots and in a semi-suggestive position with her father in some of the other images. Miley ended up issuing an apology and the issue slowly faded away. (See Photos and Story)
- Racy Photos on Her MySpace - Honestly, Miley’s popularity grew immensely after many racy MySpace pics and naughty, sexually suggestive photos were leaked online last year by Miles and her friends. Miley was caught making out with various girls (see #9), in some hot make out session with her ex-boyfriend Thomas Sturges (photos). Several more intimate photos, never meant to be seen for mass viewing, were leaked online when a young hacker became obsessed with the Hannah Montana star. We have seen Miley attempting to expose her breasts (photo), doing a wet t-shirt contest in the shower (photos), and attempting to pose seductively in her underwear (photos). Perhaps her internet connection should have disconnected by her parents when this kept happening over and over.
- Lap Dance Photos on Director’s Twitter - This was an instance of Miley practicing an inappropriate and suggestive lap dance for the old and wacky director of “The Last Song” movie that were photographed. The director then proceeded to take the photos and post the Kodak moment on his Twitter. The director shares a lot of the blame for this bad judgment (if not all of it), but Miley should know better than to be doing lap dances for 50-year old men who have grandchildren her age.
- Pole Dancing at Teen Choice Awards - This is perhaps the freshest screw-up on our list. Less than a month ago, Miley performed her new single ‘Party in the USA’ at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards. She came out in tight-black bootie shorts (photo) and in an extremely suggestive style jumped up on a moving ice cream cart (complete with stripper pole) and did a quick pole dance during the middle of the song to a stunned yet thrilled audience. Meanwhile, Papa Billy Ray smiled and applauded his approval in the audience. It is still mind-numbing that a producer of a teen awards show thought this was a good idea, regardless of actual intent. - Decision to Date Justin Gaston - Nothing is more controversial than a pure, virginal sixteen year old girl dating a 20 year-old underwear model, who is also an aspiring country star. This uncanny and allegedly asexual relationship between Miley and Justin Gaston might have been the critical turning point from Miley being seen as a virginal Disney star to a young woman with an appetite for sexy and dangerous boys and their toys. - Jogging in Bikini/Bra with Shirtless Boyfriend - Miley and then model boyfriend Justin Gaston went for an early morning run earlier this year. Justin ran sans shirt, which I normally do as well during the summer. That is perfectly acceptable for a 20-year old modeling stud. However, Miley ran in denim Daisy Dukes and a low cut shirt with her bra/bikini top covered boobs bouncing in-n-out of it - completely inadequate jogging attire for an underage girl that is more than aware that the paparazzi is present to track her every move and illegal bounce. Miley knew exactly what she was doing but later tried to explain it away by stating that she was simply dressed for a car wash. (Photos and Story)
- Asian Slanted Eyes Photo Controversy - I think most of us at some point made ’slant-eyes’ Asian faces during our childhood. But that was in a different time and age. However, this is not as acceptable to do in this ultra political correct world we now live in. Miley made the mistake of doing her own version of ’slant-eyes’ in a group photo at a small party. Several other kids in the photo were goofing off as well. Miley was probably actually clueless that her gesture could be found offensive. Being the mega-celebrity that she is - it was just a matter of days before the photo was circulating all over the internet. The OAC admonished her with a stong handed statement. One Asian woman filed a lawsuit seeking $4 billion in damages for all of the Asian Pacific Islanders living in the Los Angeles area for the ‘racist’ picture. So I guess it was acceptable for Michael Jackson to want to be white, but racist for Miley to want to be Asian. Miley has to be smart, especially at these parties, and in today’s society where a cell phone camera can catch celebrities in a wild array of unfathomable positions or gestures. Miley was being harmless but very likely will simply be ‘Smiley Miley’ the next time someone says “CHEESE!”
- Twitter Rants/’Miles to Go’ Book - For someone who often complains about public scrutiny of her personal life, Miley has no problem putting her emotions and feuds in print or on her Twitter. Miley’s first autobiography “Miles To Go” tells all you want to know (or don’t want to know!) about her first failed attempt at a romantic relationship with Nick Jonas, better known as ‘Prince Charming’ in the book. Alternatively, she uses Twitter to profess her love to an unknown person, send Justin Gaston messages and rant about how the media doesn’t leave her alone. Well, maybe the media would leave her alone more if she wasn’t constantly bringing attention to herself via her Twitter or rambling thoughts. - Photos Kissing Girls - Miley also likes to spread the love to her girl friends. I don’t know why, but there is often something about Christian girls wanting to go out smooch other girls and mark it up to experimenting or being confused. First, Miley got sweet and wild with a girl in a hotel hallway (photos), then she was caught trying to attack Ashley Tisdale (photo) and most recently kissing “I Kissed A Girl” singer Katy Perry (photos). Locking lips Lohan-style might be the chic thing in Hollywood right now, but it’s definitely not appropriate for a sixteen year-old Disney star.
- Overexposure - #10 was originally ‘Bad Parenting,’ but after some thinking I decided Miley’s parents are probably doing the best they can do with all of the vulchers and snake oil salesmen around them in Hollywood. Still Miley’s folks, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, could have kept a bit tighter reign on her at times and monitored some of her online behavior, as all parents should do with teenage children. They also should have 86′d the topless Vanity Fair shoot and not allowed the stripper-like performance of ‘Party in the USA’ at the Teen Choice Awards.
However, something they are letting take place that might eventually hurt Miley’s career or her psyche in general is overexposure. You can’t avoid Miley in the supermarket, Wal-Mart, television, radio, or the internet without hearing or seeing Miley Cyrus. I understand you have to do the branding while the iron is hot, but give the kid at least a small bit of what little remains of her childhood to enjoy.
Exposure and profitability is a good thing, but overexposure almost always ends up killing the product in the process. Miley could be an exception to that rule much in the same way that Britney Spears has been, but Britney has not done it without stints in rehab, failed marriages, and a massive meltdown. Hopefully, Miley can learn from her own mistakes, and from the mistakes of others so she can mature her career as graceful as possible over time.
We love Miley here at the Bumpshack and think she has survived remarkably well to this point in her career. Hopefully she can escape the demons and heartache that usually ends up suffocating child stars in Hollywood.

This blog has most definitely made me realize why I am not an advid blogger. I wish people posted about the scandlas of Miley and took it a little more seriously. Anyways, I really think Miley is an average 16 year old and in the celebrity world it is a hard thing to handle. She has so much fame that first came from her dad, but now that she sky rocketed so fast, Billy is beginning to live through her. It is sad to see that these are the lives celebs live. I honestly think that Miley is doing a lot better than Britney Spears and has not had as many shocking crazy moments that we have seen Britney go through. Miley is young and her parents are going to look out for her. I disagree that MIley has had over exposure in today’s day in age. In the picture of Miley sharing candy with another girl is not them kissing and I have not seen any photos of her really kissing, so is it really a scandal? Twitter is like a facebook and people update their status all the time with out thinking about who is reading it and so forth. I am guilty of that so I am not going to scrutinize against Miley on that. We need to find more credible criticizing of her. This all seems like a joke to me. THe slant eye photo was a crazy face she made in a picture with Asian friends as well. She was not trying to be racist or degrade anything. She is a young girl having fun. I will agree to the fact that because she is prominent in the public eye it might help if she was more careful about some of those things so people don’t look down on her as they are doing here. Lastly, I am going to say that a four year difference in age for dating now a days is nothing. People just make it a big deal because she is an “innocent” young celeb. How many girls in your highschools are dating four years older. I am sure there are more than you think. It really would stink to be a celebrity because of how many other people are jealous and write cruel unessesary things.
It seems to me, all those photo’s of her ‘kissing girls’ aren’t photos of her kissing girls. None of them. If you ask me, she’s just fooling around like everyone does. Teasing. I do that. Am I a bad girl? Nope. But she shouldn’t behave so sexy. There are children who are her fans. Does a 10 year old want to see her idol without clothes? I don’t think so. She’s trying to behave like Hilary Duff, but is becoming more and more of a Lindsay Lohan. I think it’s a call for attention or a call for being treated as an adult and not a disneygirl.

Well I’ve never really been a fan of Miley’s, sure I watch her show sometimes but she’s no role model of mine. She needs to tone it down a bit, she has so many young kids looking up to her, she shouldn’t be doing these kind of things. Its not really that bad yet, but its her life so she can do whatever with it, but she really needs to remember that she’s a huge role model to girls, thats what digusts me the most with this. But then again how much of this is true? I dunno, the media can twist and turns things to make anyone look bad, maybe thats what happend with Miley but who knows?? I’ve never meet her so I don’t know what she’s really like. Yeah she’s an American teenager, so am I, but I don’t do stupid stuff like that, if me and my girlfriends saw another girl dressing and doing stuff like this, we’d call her a slut, famous or not. I guess she is under a lot of pressure from being famous, but seriously when you get into this kind of business you know its going to be like this. I wouldn’t be surprised if she eventually did turn out like Britney or Lindsay. Its hard for the younger stars to stay on the straight and narrow.

Yes i agree that she’s a teenager and apparently thats what we do. Wrong! thats what some teenagers do…I surely don’t do that, dancing on a pole, showing my bra in a picture, running with a low cut shirt and jean shorts. Again she is a famous celebrity and she has to watch what she does cause again she has kids who look up to her. And if she decide to dress up in short shorts, showing off your bra and do those sort of things then she should no longer represent Disney she is no longer a child star and should be treated like an adult if thats what she wants. But personally I have lost respect for Miley, you don’t hear hardly anything about Selena Gomez, Emily Osment doing things that miley has. You know why? because they are smart about what they do and know how to handle themselves and I have respect for them. Yes everyone makes mistakes, but after a point you should learn from your mistakes and I fear that Miley won’t though. And she shouldn’t be complaining about the media either, she decided to become a star and the media is what comes along with being a star. While every teen has their moments and it’s normal… when you make your brand being a role model for 6 - 12 year olds, you need to step up and BE a role model. She chose this as her lifestyle, now she needs to adjust herself to it.
