19 Pound Baby Born To Indonesian Woman (Photo!)

An Indonesian woman gave birth to a baby boy, the biggest baby ever born, with 19.2-pound (8.7Kg) and 24.4 inches (62 cm), via c-section at a public hospital in North Sumatra on Monday (September 21).

“He’s got strong appetite, every minute, it’s almost non-stop feeding,” Dr. Binsar Sitanggang said. “This baby boy is extraordinary, the way he’s crying is not like a usual baby. It’s really loud.”

The big baby might be a result of his 41 year-old mother’s diabetes. When a diabetic mother‘s glucose level is high during pregnancy, the baby can receive too much glucose and grow too large, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Wow thats amazing! I would have no doubt that diabetes played a major role in the enormous result; that is one tough lady. I would like to point out, however, that there are other possible causes of larger than normal pregnancies. Although there has never been a baby this big before, there have been other numerous occasions where a baby is born “exceedingly over the average size and weight”(Louis Chang, Diabetes and Birth Defects p28).
Other influential factors include obesity in the mother causing gestational diabetes, which goes undiagnosed and untreated because it forms during the pregnancy. Although this has been the case in a few pregnancies over the years, it is still extremely rare. I am not trying to tie obesity to ‘huge baby syndrome.’ In most cases, the pregnancy over an average size of 9 pounds or more have no discernible risks that are shown as the cause. While genetic and protein modifications are still being analyzed, a larger than normal baby is just nature’s way of saying the baby is going to have a big heart when he grows up, which our world needs more of.
