UConn football player Jasper Howard was stabbed to death during a fight after an on-campus dance on Sunday (October 18) - watch video. Coach Randy Edsall said the team was heartbroken and devastated over the loss of Howard and revealed the situation is even more tragic because Jasper was about to become a father.

Randy Edsall, head football coach, said “Jazz was a tremendous young man who had grown so much in his short time with us at UConn. He was starting to come into his own as both a player and a person. He will be sorely missed but we will have him in our memories.”

“Many of you know Jasper – a devoted son, friend, and promising student-athlete. I know that our community is grieving this loss and is distressed by the violence it involved,” said University President Michael Hogan in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to Jasper’s family, friends, and teammates at this time of incredible sorrow.”

The 20 year-old, described as a good kid who never got into trouble, was expecting a baby with his girlfriend, whose identity hasn’t been revealed. “As Jazz looks down on us, I can promise him and his family, that son or daughter will have 105 uncles,” punter Desi Cullen, a team captain, said at an afternoon news conference. “And we will do what it takes to not get through this, but to grow from it.”
