NFL star Tim Tebow and his mother Pam are the stars of a pro-life commercial for “Focus On The Family” that will air during the Super Bowl. This is already causing a lot of controversy after women from several Feminist groups demanded CBS to drop the ad, which of course delivers a touching anti-abortion message.

“An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year — an event designed to bring Americans together,” said Jemhu Greene, president of the New York-based Women’s Media Center.

“By offering one of the most coveted advertising spots of the year to an anti-equality, anti-choice, homophobic organization, CBS is aligning itself with a political stance that will damage its reputation, alienate viewers, and discourage consumers from supporting its shows and advertisers,” the letter said.

The conservative Christian group “Focus On The Family” is reportedly paying $2,5 million dollars for the 30-second commercial. Tim’s mom recalls when she was pregnant with Tim back in 1987 she ignored the doctors’ recommendations and gave birth to Tim, the 2007’s Heisman Trophy winner.

“I know some people won’t agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe,” Tim Tebow said. “I’ve always been very convicted of it [his views on abortion] because that’s the reason I’m here, because my mom was a very courageous woman. So any way that I could help, I would do it.”

The message is right, the opportunity is wrong! If the idea is to get to as many people as possible, they also have to consider if whoever is watching Super Bowl will really give that important message a second thought. I don’t think so… people want to watch football not reflect on important ethical issues.

CBS couldn’t have rejected an ad featuring such a big star like Tim in fear of being the target of harsh criticism from conservatives all over the country. Of course CBS should follow the policy to rule out broadcast of contentious advocacy ads.
