I’ll Pay For Your IVF, Now Abort It
Karen Salmansohn is the author of several self-help books aimed towards women who have trouble with dating and dealing with men. No book she could have written could have prepared her for what her boyfriend Mitchell Leff recently did to her upon finding out she was pregnant, which shouldn’t have been a surprise to him.
Karen and Mitch met having breakfast last year at a Manhattan hot spot. Mitch was still married, but told Karen that the divorce was about final. The two started dating and quickly became engaged when Mitchell popped the question and gave her a Tiffany’s engagement ring. He went on to spend over $150,000 in vacations, renovations to her condo, and spoiling the author in the following months.
Both agreed they wanted to have a baby together. The only problem was that Karen was in her late 40’s and needed IVF to get pregnant.
Mitchell agreed to going through the IVF procedure with Karen, donated his sperm, made 10 visits to the clinic with her, and even financed the $28,000 procedure.
[In Vitro Fertilization, better known in the post-35 female crowd as IVF, is an expensive procedure that can help a married couple or woman, that has had troubles reproducing, create life through a very intense, emotional draining, and complex series of extensive shots, hormones, pills, and lab assistance.
The IVF procedure has roughly five different steps: Ovarian Stimulation, Egg Retrieval, Fertilization, Culture and Selection, and Embryo Transfer.
IVF is very expensive whereas a single cycle can cost anywhere from $15,000 - $40,000. The live birth success rate for one cycle is around 27%. The success rate can nearly double with additional cycles.
The woman gets shots every day leading up to the procedure to prepare the womb. She likely will be monitored by a doctor near daily during and leading up to the Embryo Transfer.
After the transfer, and if it is successful, the woman will continue to get progesterone shots and apply estrogen patches to her stomach as the pregnancy matures.
It's an exhaustive and emotionally draining procedure, ask any woman that has been through it.]
It sounds almost slightly romantic up until this point. But this is the part of the story where Jekyll became Hyde and the couple’s IVF became F-U, see you in court.
Perhaps the 51- year old Mitch thought the procedure would not be successful or maybe realized he would be pushing 70 when the kid graduated from high school. Whatever the reason, upon hearing of Karen’s successful IVF and successful pregnancy, he had a change of heart and told her that he was “too old” to have another child and that she should get an abortion.
Now the ‘laundromat king’ is being taken to the cleaners as Salmansohn is suing Leff in Manhattan Supreme Court for the support she says he promised to pay her during the pregnancy and childbirth. Karen claims Mitchell promised to pay her in excess of her $150,000 salary for the year she would take off work to have and support the baby.
Karen truly is a real life Carrie Bradshaw, and I don’t think the creative writers that masterminded many of the implausible Sex and the City episodes could have written a script as unbelievable as the one between the self-help author and laundromat king.
The court will ultimately grant child support to Salmansohn and very likely provide a monetary judgement for support during her pregnancy if she can prove that she relied upon Leff’s promises to quit her job in order to get pregnant and raise the child at home for the first year.

OMG. They will definitely grant child support based on the fact that well, that’s his baby, pretty undeniably. What a jerk.
He left you because you are clearly unstable.
Was on her side, til I read this:
“Karen claims Mitchell promised to pay her in excess of her $150,000 salary for the year she would take off work to have and support the baby.”
Hmm…I kind of thought taking off work for a year to support a baby was what a mother is SUPPOSED TO DO!
This kid is going to grow up all f**ked up with a mother who treated him/her as nothing more than a business arrangement.
I know Karen personally and she’s a very together, inspiring woman – who’s not only been a mentor to me – but many women in New York City. We all met Mitchell when they were engaged – and he seemed totally in love with her. This story is shocking. I know Karen is a strong woman and will rise above all this. It’s Mitchell I feel sorry for. He’s obviously the unstable one – and now the unlucky one – because he’ll never find another woman as wonderful and together and loving as Karen. And it’s not only me who feels this way about Karen. She be an inspiration not only to women in New York, but all around the world, with her uplifintg books and seminars. She is a true gem.
Dear Mrs. Reynolds, if in fact that is your name. You are clearly insufferable; my pity goes to those forced to deal with you on any regular basis.
To the commenter John Dixon -and Everyone reading this -
The NYPost explained how this creepy asshole Mitchell Leff abandoned Salmansohn with medical bills and all kinds of pregnancy expenses – and told her to turn down two money paying jobs because he was going to support her while pregnant -so he left her without any income – while she is pregnant and about to give birth – and unprepared to support a child as a single mom.
This Mitchell Leff jerk promised to support Karen if she got pregnant – she got pregnant – he has to support her- because thanks to him she has no income coming in – because he told her to turn down jobs!
How would you feel Mr. Dixon if some jerk did this to your daughter – abandoned her out of nowhere – while she’s pregnant – with no income coming in?
Plus – Mitchell Leff paid 28 grand to get her pregnant – then changed his mind 12 days after insemination – told her he didnt want a child after paying 28 grand to get karen pregnant – and making her go through that totally rough IVF process. What kind of man does IVF then 12 days later changes their mind about wanting a baby? A socipath man.
Karen should be happy this socipath Mr. Leff is out her life – and not in her baby’s life.
First – to answer a comment above…
Many women take off work for maternity leave when they are pregnant and after pregnancy. Mr. Leff abaondoned Karen when she’s in her 40’s and pregnant – which is a rough time with morning sickness and thereby a rough time for a woman to make money – plus he left her with no income – because as the NY POst and Huffingtonpost both report Mr. Leff told Karen to turn down 2 money paying jobs because he would support her while pregnant … He made an oral contract then broke it. As Huffingtonpost explains if a couple hires a surrogate to carry their baby – and promises to take care of the surrogate while she is pregnant – which couples do when a surrogate is pregnant – then lets say the couple changes their mind about wanting to keep the baby – and abandons the pregnant surrogate – theyd be responsible for living up to their oral contract and supporting the surrogate during pregnancy. Plus – the couple would be jerks for changing their mind – if they paid for the IVF and got the surrogate pregnant only to change their mind. Same with this jerk Mitchell Leff. What kind of shmucky guy pays 28 grand to get his fiance pregnant – then 12 days after he does the insemination and finds out she’s pregnant he tells her he doesnt want the baby? The man is really suffering from emotional issues.
