Armando Galarraga Robbed of Perfect Game by Ump Jim Joyce

Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga was robbed of a perfect game tonight with two outs in the 9th inning when first base umpire Jim Joyce ruled Jason Donald safe at first base, when he fact he was out by over a foot.

Galarraga went on to get out the batter following Joyce for what many will consider the first 28 out perfect game in Major League Baseball History.

Joyce came out after the game and admitted that he blew the call:

“It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the [stuff] out of it,” Joyce said, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires’ locker room. “I just cost that kid a perfect game.”

One has to feel a bit for Joyce, but not nearly as bad as we all feel for Galarraga who was a bad ump’s call away from the third perfect game in 2010.

There has only been 20 perfect games in MLB history.  Dallas Braden for the A’s and Roy Halladay for the Phillies threw perfect games earlier this year.

Galarraga was extremely gracious in accepting Joyce’s apology and told him “nobody’s perfect,” although Armando was in fact perfect on Wednesday night.
