Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Fastest Chart Topper Since 1967
Of all of the songs to be released in the past 43 years you’d probably least expect that Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ is the fastest Capitol Records song to reach the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 since Bobbie Gentry’s ‘Ode to Billie Joe’ in 1967.
The song makes the quickest sprint to the summit by a Capitol single since Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Joe” likewise reached the top spot in four weeks on the chart dated Aug. 26, 1967. Five months before Gentry, the Beatles’ “Penny Lane” had also zipped to No. 1 in four frames.
Perry’s song features a guest camo by rapper Snoop Dogg. She has performed the song at a couple of award shows since its release.
