Confirmed: Steve Carell Leaving The Office

For fans of The Office you can kiss goodbye to Steve Carell after his 7-year contract with the show runs out in May according to E!.

“I just think it’s time,” Steve told our Kristina Guerrero. “I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go.”

In a small morsel of hope Carell states that there is some hope the show could go on (uh, uh…yeah right).  That would be like Sanford and Son attempting to play on  back in the day without Fred (Red Foxx) or The Jeffersons without George (Sherman Hemsley).

But according to Steve, The Office could go on without him. “It doesn’t certainly mean the end of the show. I think it’s just a dynamic change to the show, which could be a good thing, actually. Add some new life and some new energy…I see it as a positive in general for the show.”

Does anyone even watch this show any more? It seems like it would be big with college aged kids that were Conan heads or crack heads.  For fans of the office  you can enjoy the show with Steve and the Dunder Mifflin crew for the upcoming 2010-2011 season.

Ricky Gervais is an obvious choice, I must admit. He’s hilarious and no one knows the part as well and could jump right in. That would be too ‘king cool!
