Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan has been offered the starring role of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann‘s adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

Leonardo DiCaprio has been set to play Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire cast as Nick Carraway. Luhrmann has been conducting table reads for quite some time now, trying to find his perfect cast for the well-known novel.

In the novel, Buchanan is Gatsby’s love, “a shallow woman whom Gatsby lost due to his being poor.”

According to reports, Mulligan heard the news while on the red carpet at the Fashion Council Awards in New York when Luhrmann called and told her she’d won the part.
