Former VP candidate John Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth Edwards, who had recently decided to stop treatment, has passed away at her Chapel Hill home on Tuesday (December 7) after a long battle against breast cancer.

The 61 year-old was first diagnosed with cancer during the 2004 presidential campaign, while her husband, then Senator John Edwards, was the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the US. The cancer went into remission after surgery and resurfaced in 2007.

John and Elizabeth, who met when they were both attending the University of North Carolina School of Law, tied the knot in 1977 and had two children, a son named Wade and a daughter named Cate. The 16 year-old Cate died in a car accident back in 1996.

Elizabeth also had to deal with her husband’s transgressions when his extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter, with whom he had a love child, was exposed in 2008 during the presidential race. The couple finally separated after being married for more than 32 years in late 2009.

After giving it a go for a year, Jane Carrey and her husband Alex Santana are calling it quits.

Jane and Alex have a 9-month-old son, Jackson Riley. The couple, both musicians, were married in November of last year.

Jim Carrey’s rep told PEOPLE:

“The couple will remain friends, as well as devoted parents to their 9-month-old son, Jackson Riley,”

Sad that they couldn’t work it out, but what’s really unfortunate is how people slide in and out of marriage like it’s casual. If you’re not right for each other, maybe don’t get married? Surely that’s something this pair could have figured out beforehand if they didn’t even last a year.

Kelsey Grammer and Kayte Walsh are now engaged — which is news to everyone except Kelsey and Kayte. Apparently, the couple has been keeping the engagement a secret for awhile!

Kelsey’s rep told PEOPLE:

“Yes, they’re engaged,”

“They’re very happy and very much in love. They never announced it because he wanted to be discreet and enjoy the good news privately.”

I guess an engagement makes sense, what with a new apartment and all.

Kelsey Grammer’s ex-wife Camille Grammer filed for divorce in July, and Kelsey has been seeing Kayte since. They’re moving fast!

Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, was arrested in London for allegedly sexually assaulting two women in Sweden while he visited the country back in August. Assange was presented to the judge, who refused bail because of the risk of escape, at City Of Westminster Magistrates Court.

Assange refused extradition and proclaimed he will fight extradition to Sweden and continue publishing on Wikileaks since he considers this case an attack on media freedom. Assange’s lawyer, Mark Stephens, claims the charges were “politically motivated” and there is not enough evidence against the 39 year-old Australian citizen.

Wikileaks spokesman, Kristinn Hrafnsson, said in a statement Assange’s arrest would not stop the release of secret compromising files. He said, “Wikileaks is operational. We are continuing on the same track as laid out before. Any development with regards to Julian Assange will not change the plans we have with regards to the releases today and in the coming days.”

Assange will remain in custody until December 14, 2010, which gives the US plenty of time to figure out a way to extradite him to the US on the ongoing investigation into Wikileaks after classified information was published on the website.

Gerard Batten, a UKIP MEP, said the Assange case highlighted the dangers of the European arrest warrant. He said: “I don’t know of the quality of the evidence in Mr Assange’s case but it does seem that he is involved in political turmoil and intrigue and there are a lot of people keen to shut him up and there is nothing a court in the UK can do to look at the evidence before they extradite him.”

The Wikileaks honcho was charged with one count of unprotected sex with a woman identified as Miss A, who insisted he used a condom, and another count of unprotected sex/rape with another woman while she was asleep.

Is this some type of sick global conspiracy against the Wikileaks founder? Or did Julian Assange really had unprotected sex and raped those women?

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith, who became one of the best sportscasters in the 1970s and 1980s, has died after suffering a brain hemorrhage in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Sunday (November 5).

The 72 year-old was one of the first NFL players to become a sportscaster with one of the most successful broadcasting career on ABC’s “Monday Night Football”. Don was also known for singing the Willie Nelson line “Turn out the lights, the party’s over” when a team was unequivocally leading the game.

“He was the best there was,” Don’s wife, Susan Meredith, told the Associated Press. “We lost a good one.” R.I.P. Don Meredith.

Comedian Chelsea Handler, of E!’s The Chelsea Lately Show, had a humorous and explicative rant against ‘A-list’ actress Angelina Jolie during a performance in New Jersey over the weekend.

Handler called Jolie a ‘f***ing homewrecker,’ ‘f***ing c*nt,’ and ‘f***ing b**ch’ in describing what she really thinks about the enigmatic Jolie (watch the video above).

In full disclosure, Handler is close friends with Brad Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston. The two recently spent a lonely Thanksgiving together in Cabo.

Super-actor Johnny Depp has been dating his girlfriend, Vanessa Paradis, for 12 years — long enough for a common law marriage. But why hasn’t he bitten the bullet and said “I do”?

Johnny tells Extra:

“I never found myself needing that piece of paper,”
“Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say, okay you’re married… If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not… But the thing is, I’d be so scared of ruining her last name. She’s got such a good last name.”

Transformers star Josh Duhamel was kicked off an an airplane — and the first grade — for not being able to follow directions.

Josh was in route from New York to Kentucky when his flight was delayed. While on the runway, Josh pulled out his Blackberry to send a text and was promptly told to put it away by the flight attendant.

The actor refused, the plane returned to the gate, and he was escorted off.

Duhamel’s rep said only:

“He’s sorry,”

Sorry that he missed his flight? Important people don’t have to turn off their cellphones like the regular folk, duh.

Iconic Chicago Cubs announcer and former player Ron Santo has passed away at the age of 70 from complications from bladder cancer.

He had battled serious health problems since age 18 when he was diagnosed with diabetes.  He lost both legs to diabetes later on in life.

Santo was an All-Star for 9 of the 15 years he played.  He so desperately wanted to be in the Hall of Fame but came up short every time.  Ron played all but one season with the Cubs. He played his last year with the cross-town White Sox.

He will be be missed by the Cubs and all of their fans.
