Originally, it was reported that the studio wanted Hugh Grant for the role, but it looks as if Oscar-nominee Firth has won over the executives. Good choice.

An Education star Carey Mulligan is rumored to be taking on the lead role of Miss Eliza Doolittle. Mulligan was recently cast as Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby.

The real question will be if these actors can sing. Sure they’re great performers, but if they mess up a classic, that won’t be pretty.

Filming is set to begin in May 2012.
