That is the question. In the final rose ceremony, Bachelor Brad Womack proposed to the woman of his dreams, single mom Emily Maynard, but things haven’t been easy for the new couple.

Brad and Emily are still adjusting to being a couple, which became even more difficult because they couldn’t be seen together for the past few months. Emily’s heart broke as she saw her fiancé on dates with other women on TV, although he assured her she was the one.

“There have been numerous times where either she or I have said, ‘To hell with it. It’s just too difficult,’ ” Womack tells PEOPLE.

“The hardest part is behind us,” Maynard says. “I feel pretty confident if we can make it through [the past three months], we can make it through.”

So are Emily and Brad still engaged? Brad answers, “I’m so happily engaged. I’ve never been happier, I promise you that.” The couple also released an official statement asking the media to leave them alone and let them be happy.

“At long last, Emily and I can be open to the world and each other about our relationship. Though we are madly in love, it has been a bumpy couple of months for us and our priority right now is to focus on our relationship. We hope that you can respect our privacy as we return to normalcy and begin our off-screen lives together,” the statement from the couple read.
