Steven Tyler said Thia took a step out. Jennifer Lopez asked her to dig deeper each week, saying Thia has to understand what she is singing about and act it out. Randy Jackson was impressed – Thia can really sing!
Thia finally delivered a fun performance, but I don’t know why the judges were so happy… did Thia miss a couple of words there? Or was she trying hard to remember the lyrics during some moments through the song? It was better than the boring ballads, but still not enough.

Yes, Thia missed some words in her song. She turned around and looked at the backup singers and if you look closely, you could see the tears well up in her eyes and she held it together with everything she had not to start crying and fall apart. In other words, she kind of covered it well, though I have been a performer and judge of talent shows and I usually don’t miss much, and I know the song very well. The praises from the judges were , to me, them trying to keep her from outright bawling – and you could hear jennifer comforting her and encouraging her even before Ryan went to each of the judges for their comments. They all were basically holding her up so she wouldn’t fall apart. She is pretty with a lovely voice but is in over her head. She has many years to develop that connection with the audience and build her performance skill. Last night was a crucial night, and tonight is a bit heartbreaking, with the one going home not being on the Tour. I hate to say it, but Thia should be the one going home, or Hayley. To me, each of the others has earned their spot on the Tour. I am very frustrated that the judges and Ryan gave Thia a total pass for her flub especially while Stefano gets called out for closing his eyes while singing – so does Pia and so does Thia. Thia should go home tonight but I wish her the best.
On another note, well, two actually — Pia sang All is Fair in Love, which was a Barbara Streisand power ballad, which Pia has even admitted is her niche – and her strategy to win. Whitney, Mariah, Barbara, Celine – take on those power ballads and “slay” them and she proves she’s the one to win. I don’t agree, though I definitely respect her ability and beauty. She does what others have done in the past – skated around the task at hand by picking a Motown Artist who has done a song which has been done as a power ballad, which is her strength. Not quite fair. She needs to do some up tempo things and show some personality to see if she really should. Also not fair – having Motown week during this important elimination week – and therefore making an inherent challenge for our beloved Scotty. Some have said in the past that this is sometimes a weeding out week for the one they don’t want on Tour. If that’s true, they were setting Scotty up to fail, and he did not deserve that. He did OK, and hopefully, his fans will pull him through!
