Deadliest Catch New Captain Derrick Ray Is a Mean Guy

Deadliest Catch” new captain, Derrick Ray, who replaces Captain Phil Harris in a new season of the show, is a very strict and sometimes tactless guy as he was caught using the former captain’s tragic death to rip one of the crew members, engineer Steve Ward.

Deadliest Catch Finale: Josh Harris Remembers Captain Phil Harris

Yep. And Derrick did it right in front of Phil Harris’ two sons, Jake Harris and Josh Harris. Jake tried to stop the fight between the new captain and Steve, when Derrick snapped and said: “Phil’s not here, he’s f**king dead, okay?” [watch video at TMZ]

Derrick must have a heart of stone or no brains. I’m sure the son of the dead man in question hasn’t been able to forget he tragically lost his father a little over a year ago. Geez. Josh was also nearby and obviously heard the verbal spat.

Deadliest Catch” season 7 premieres on the Discovery Channel at 9 pm ET/PT on April 12.

Derrick Ray may have the new spot on the ship, but he will never come close to being a Captain. My husband and I watched Captain Phil Harris, and his sons because they were the real thing. They showed LOVE in a family, showed fighting also which goes along with being brothers, and sons and father. They also went threw sickness in different ways like real people can, and do. Derrick Ray you might of been asked by the sons to steer the ship, but as your hard core strick attitude, it won’t go with the family of the harris sons. We are, and were part of the family we watched each week, with Captain Phil, sons, and all the rest of the boats that we fell in love with that made us a complete show family. They felt like our real family, and to disrespect Captain Phils memory with your stupid mouth, about the ….King Phil is dead won’t sit with us. Your a loud mouth show off, and you think you know it all B—–d… and that’s with a capital B. The dirt under your shoes can’t compare to Captain Phil, so shut up stupid….We still love Captain Phil, and the sons…..In other words ship out, you’ll never be important like Captain Phil was, and still is…. From his tv family

Derrick Ra(t)y deserves a swift kick in the you-know-what by the Harris boys. It was our pleasure to watch this boat…one of our favorites, but with their new captain, we just waited for the whole thing to blow up in the boys’ face…and it did. How pathetic the rightous arrogant jerk is to do this to Jake, even if it was his stuff, it’s only pot you fool! Even the cop let him go…loser! Go find someone else to push around…probably your family! Where are the crabs Derrick…?? Best of luck to the Harris boys and the crew…get a new Captain and get crabbing! We love you…Best to you from British Columbia!!

Derrick Ray totally did the right thing. On any commercial boat, there is a zero tolerance for drugs and for very good reasons. There is only one person in charge and that is the Captain. You may not like the the guy, but its his rules, or get off the boat. If a deckhand got in Captain Phils face, the hammer was going to come down, and hard. It’s not a democracy out on the water, its the captain in charge. Seems to me that Derrick Ray could smell the BS and is a no nonsense kind of guy. He was teaching the kid how to maneuver the boat until he got a whiff of Jake after sampling some weed.
He should of called the Coast Guard and had all of them drug tested as the knucklehead engineer had to know someone down in that rat hole of an engine room was smoking dope. Its got a real distinct odor. I run a boat half that size and keep it in much better shape that that thing. You would think that maybe cutting back a pack a day of smokes would allow the owners to spend more time and money on maintenance.
Also remember, it’s Hollywood, things get edited to make better television.

When you lose the confidence of the people beneath you, you have failed. He didn’t find the crab, he lost the faith of the crew and tried to put the failure of the season on the crew. A good captain or leader will take personal responsibility for everything. He didn’t. Maybe Jake was smoking dope, maybe it was someone else, maybe even captain Derrick himself. Either way it was a complete failure and he needed to take ownership of that. Moron.

I just watched the episode. First off… when crab season is ramped up waiting for a P.O. Box can be a long long long long wait. Anyone who has ever waited at a government line knows its hard to tell how long you’ve been there. And it isn’t like they were off getting drunk… they were buying supplies for the boat. The crew works out what needs to be done and EVERYTHING was being taken care of…

Secondly, there has been this misconception that steve pushed Captain Derrick.. Steve did not push the captain, the captain pushed HIM! If you watch the episode, Steve was trying to remove himself from the situation and the Captain pushed Steve against the wall with his entire body and getting in his face like men do when they want to fight…

But after Derrick yelled “Phil is DEAD!” Steve SHOULD have knocked his lights out. For one he said it in front of the boys… for two… Steve worked and lived with Captain Phil for so long they might as well have been family. Did you see the episode where phil died? I think Steve took it harder than most anyone, outside Jake and Josh.

If Phil were alive seeing Steve treat his crew like that he’d be ALL OVER Derrick. Derrick is a piece of crap and I hope the producers bar him from the show.

So what… Jake might have slipped? OR not… he passed his drug test but suddenly, it is impossible that a old used roach couldn’t have come from anywhere else? No one else is capable of smoking weed? If you look where he “found” the roach, it was under junk. If jake was trying to hide something, he’d just flick the damn thing overboard. A search of jakes belongings found NO SIGNS of marijuana. So Jake was RIGHT in NOT SUBMITTING to another test. BLood test or otherwise. It takes a brave man to stand up for his own personal rights. And Jake, likely emotional about the man that spit on his fathers name, was just trying to get away from a violent and abusive situation.

Jake might have been an abuser of drugs but Captain Derrick is an abuser of emotions. You tell me which is worse. At least what Jake does is to himself… instead of being a predator upon others like *smirk* “CAPTAIN” Derrick.
