The day that many housewives and househusbands thought would never happened has happened. ABC announced today that it’s ending two long running soap operas, All My Children and One Life to Live.

All My Children, which has been on the air since January 5, 1970, will have Erica Kane’s last stand ending in September 2011.

One Life to Live, started in July 15, 1968, will cease operations in January 2012.

In their place, a Mario Batali-hosted food show called “The Chew” will premiere in September, and a health/lifestyle transformation show tentatively called “The Revolution” will premiere in January.

“General Hospital” will remain on the network.

I grew up with All My Children on in the background for much of my childhood. The news is saddening but as Bobby Dylan said, “the times are a changing.”  People want to be more proactive and interactive in their television choices. They want less acting and scripts and more reality based and talk shows.

The soap’s cancellation will still come as a surprise to thousands of viewers of the show.

What will Susan Lucci do now?  Surely a rival soap will snatch her up.
