“The Fighter” Micky Ward’s mother, Alice Ward, who was played in the movie by actress Melissa Leo, sadly passed away after being taken off life support at a Boston hospital on Wednesday (April 27).

The 79 year-old was the mother and manager of both of their sons’ successful boxing careers, Micky and Dicky Eklund, who was his brother’s trainer. Alice had been hospitalized since suffering a cardiac arrest in January.

Actress Melissa Leo’s portrait of Alice earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award. Christian Bale also won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as The Fighter’s brother, Dicky.
