When Kate Middleton, 29, walked down the aisle at the Westminister Abbey to wed her longtime beau Prince William, every detail was in place. The dress, the hair, the jewelry and the amazing bouquet of flowers.

Middleton’s floral designer, Shane Connelly, was responsible for the bouquet, as well as the right maple trees inside the chapel. The Royal Palace released a statement on the bouquet, explaining the history of the flowers the future Princess was carrying:

“The bouquet is a shield-shaped wired bouquet of myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth.  The bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly and draws on the traditions of flowers of significance for the Royal Family, the Middleton family and on the Language of Flowers.”

In honor of her soon-to-be husband, Middleton included sweet William blooms, and also honored the late Queen Victoria with stems from a myrtle she planted in 1845. It’s said to be royal tradition to include the stems.

After celebrating the nuptials with her husband, Middleton is expected to leave the bouquet on the grave of the First World War soldier. This tradition was started by the Queen Mother in 1923.
