Tobey Maguire Sued By Bradley Ruderman Over Illegal Poker Wins
Actor Tobey Maguire, best known for his role as Peter Parker in the “Spider-Man” movies, is being sued by a hedge fund manager, Bradley Ruderman, who was convicted of fraud, conducting a Ponzi scheme and using the investors’ money in clandestine poker games held at luxury suites at hotels in Los Angeles.
Rudeman’s company (Ruderman Capital Partners) is now in bankruptcy, but is still forced to pay victims and other creditors. So Ruderman is going after those who beat him and won big with civil lawsuits in an attempt to recover the money lost in illegal poker dens.
Tobey was apparently one heck of a good poker player, defeating Ruderman, who reportedly lost more than $25 million of investor money on poker tables, a number of times between 2007 and 2008. Ruderman lost $311, 300 to the actor, including one losing hand of $110,000 on July 30, 2007.
Other A-list celebs involved in these illegal poker games include names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. They were apparently terrible players and are not being sued by Ruderman. Included in civil lawsuits are names like Alex Gores, director Nick Cassavetes, Gabe Kaplan, Rick Salomon and Cory Leibel, among others.
In the lawsuit, the games are described as “exclusive events, by invitation only, and that there was a regular roster of players consisting of wealthy celebrities, entrepreneurs, attorneys and businessmen.” Ruderman used his clients’ money to “pay for gambling losses at clandestine, high stakes poker games that were operated without any licenses or permits.”
“As part of the scheme, funds invested in (Ruderman) were transferred to persons such as Defendant (Maguire), who received the funds on account of Ruderman’s gambling losses and on account of Defendant’s gambling winnings.”
Therefore, Tobey Maguire is “not entitled to receive the transfers from the Debtor, which transfers were compromised of improperly-diverted investor funds.”
According to a source, Tobey reportedly won $1 million a month over a period of three years, which means he could have made up to $30 – $40 million from this illegal poker games. It looks like someone has a serious gambling problem. Just because you made a fortune out of illegal gambling, it doesn’t mean it’s healthy.
