When we expected Lady GaGa to come out of whale’s womb or something equally visually shocking, she decides to surprise us by dressing in drag as her male alter ego Jo Calderone for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) held at the Nokia Theatre LA Live in Los Angeles, California on Sunday (August 28) – more pictures below.

Jo (aka GaGa) kicked off the show with a stellar performance of “You and I”, the latest single out of the album “Born This Way”, featuring a special appearance by Queen’s legendary guitarist Brian May. GaGa acted buck and managed to fall on her butt when she jumped off the piano.

GaGa’s Jo took the stage once again to present Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Jo and Brit had a moment and almost kissed… too bad Britney is too much of a good girl these days because that kiss did not happen.

Jo also accepted the award for Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for “Born This Way”. GaGa stayed in character during the whole show. We really cannot blame her for opting to wear something totally comfortable to one of these super boring and long award shows.
