Today show host Kathie Lee Gifford mistakenly asked actor Martin Short about his late wife, who died in 2010, during an interview on Wednesday morning.

Gifford asked Short about the secret to his marriage, saying, ”How many years are you in love with her now?” Short, who was clearly shocked, quietly replied, “Thirty-six.”

After realizing the mistake she made, Gifford apologized on air and also took to her Twitter to clear up the issue. ”I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”
