The Platters’ Herb Reed Dead At 83

Musician Herb Reed, one of the founders of The Platters, has sadly passed away at a hospice house in Danvers, Massachusetts on Monday (June 4), his manager Fred Balboni Jr. confirmed. Herb was 83 years old.

The health of the last surviving member of the five original had been in decline. Herb, who also suffered from obstructive pulmonary disease for years, only stopped touring last June, but he delivered his final show five months ago at a restaurant in Saugus.

The Platters were founded in Los Angeles in 1953. The group is well known for classics like “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “My Prayer,” “Twilight Time” and “The Great Pretender.”
