John Mayer Sued for Ponzi Scheme Paycheck
John Mayer is being sued after unknowingly accepting Ponzi scheme-earned cash as payment for a performance that took place in 2008.
Darren Berg, an investment banker who tricked clients into investing more than $100 million, was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison after the scheme recently came to light. Mayer, who is just one of many being sued to recover the funds from fooled investors, was hired by booking agency Grabow & Associates, and was paid with $465,000 of Berg’s “illegally-obtained funds” for the performance.
“John Mayer performed at a corporate event in 2008 and was paid for his services,” Mayer’s lawyer said in a statement. “The opportunity was brought to John through his talent agency, CAA.”
A judge will rule whether or not Mayer will be required to pay back the funds.
Ouch.
