After a record breaking 132 million votes, Phillip Phillips was crowned the winner of the eleventh season of American Idol beating fellow finalist Jessica Sanchez during the 2-hour finale held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday (May 23).

The Top 12 finalists returned to the stage to entertain us before Ryan Seacrest announced who had won the Idol title. They had the honor of sharing the stage with very special musical guests, which included names like Chaka Khan, Neil Diamond, Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s John Fogerty, Jennifer Holliday, Reba McEntire and Idol alum Fantasia Barrino.

Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler’s Aerosmith all took the stage to perform. One of the biggest moments of the night happened when Idol alum Ace Young surprised his girlfriend, Diana DeGarmo, who was also a contestant on Idol, with a live proposal on national TV. Luckily, she said “Yes” (watch video here).

Right before the winner was announced, the two finalists, Jessica and Phillip, performed a beautiful duet of Joe Cocker’s “Up Where We Belong.” When it was finally time for Phillip to perform his coronation song, “Home,” he was so overcome with emotion that he simply could not.

Phillip, “the laid back rocker,” started crying before leaving the stage to hug his parents. I did not expect that since Phillip always seemed to have it under control. Guess winning the Idol title really meant a lot to him.

After a night with three rounds of performances on Tuesday (May 22), it’s hard to predict who will take the crown tonight. Steven Tyler dared to say he thinks Phillip might steal the show. However, this season had some real tough competition and a few shocking surprises like the elimination of Joshua Ledet last week.
