“My mother never said to lose weight. Diets were never a big deal. My mom was always beautiful and voluptuous and curvy, and I always thought she was gorgeous. I did have doubts about my figure when I was 12, 14. I was a dancer, but my body was changing. Then all of a sudden I started getting boobs and my body wasn’t playing along with my game plan. It got depressing for a bit, because I desperately wanted to be a ballerina.”

On accepting a role in Mad Men: “By that point I had been in four different series and done a lot of guest-star spots on things and none of them went as I thought they were going to. So I did the thing that I wanted to do. I’m glad that I didn’t let people bully me into something that would have been about a larger network or more money. I just kind of trusted my gut.”
On her Mad Men character Joan: “You know, she has moments that are sort of unbelievable that can come across as mean, but I think she’s written so richly that you really see where she’s coming from and why she’s doing these things; and you do see vulnerable sides of her often, and you do see her sort of get back up after being kicked down over and over and over and hold her head high. And I think people root for her. I think there’s something that makes you want to root for her. And through all these things that have happened to her, she still has a sense of levity about her, and fun.”
On staying true to herself: “I’m really trying to remain true to myself. But on occasion, my stylist will go, ‘Absolutely not. You will get killed.’ I always go back to the stuff I love. Hopefully, people will see who I am and accept it.”

Christina Hendricks: I adore the incredibly tight clothing! My own wardobe’s changed – I’ve streamlined a little bit and definitely learnt from Joan’s sleekiness and tailoring. As for the herbal cigarettes, for the most part I don’t smoke as much as the guys do. I’m usually just strutting around a bit more so I don’t actually have to be inhaling it. I’m lucky because I do have scenes where the cigarettes work beautifully to punctuate certain things I’m saying.Have you had any strange fan reactions?
It seems like a very masculine show but there are women who are absolutely obsessed by it. I had a girl last year who wrote me a very long letter about how she related to my character the most and how wonderful it was because she was having an affair with her boss at work. What is it that makes Joan special?
Joan’s a dream to play – she’s not always prancing around the office. There’s that side to it, which is really fun, but there’s nitty-gritty. Mad Men star Christina Hendricks, who has been in the spotlight for her fabulous natural boobies and voluptuous curves, strips down to sexy lingerie to grace the cover of the latest issue of New York Magazine.
The 34 year-old actress says she feels self-conscious and also embarrassed that her voluptuous body is getting more attention than her acting, especially because she has been working hard.
Christina confessed, “It kind of hurt my feelings at first,” she says. “Anytime someone talks about your figure constantly, you get nervous, you get really self-conscious. I was working my butt off on the show, and then all anyone was talking about was my body!”
“It might sound silly,” she says, “but I didn’t realize I was so different. I was just oblivious. Sometimes I would go on an audition and someone would say something like, Girl, you’re refreshing! That was it.”
Christina refused to talk about her weight or dress size and she has the right to. She is setting a good example for girls who are not the ultra skinny type and actually want to pursue an acting career. Christina brought curves back! Curves are sexy!
