Actor Joaquin Phoenix shaved and clean up for his appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman on Wednesday (September 22), a year after his caveman character for the “documentary” titled “I’m Still Here” created one of the most awkward moments on TV (watch video below).
Joaquin apologized to Dave for his behavior and admitted that he was simply playing a character. Dave also wanted people to know that he was caught by surprise and he was not a part of the big hoax created by the actor and director Casey Affleck.
“I mean, I think that you’ve interviewed many, many people and I assumed that you would know the difference between a character and a real person,” he says about the now-infamous 2009 interview, in which a gum-chomping, mumbling Phoenix barely answered Letterman’s questions. “I hope I didn’t offend you in any way.”
“Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no,” Letterman told him. “I’m telling you, it was so much fun. It was batting practice, you know what I mean? Every one of them was a dinger.”
“Was there a script that you and I were working with?” he asked Phoenix, who flatly responded with, “No.”
Poor Dave! The CBS late night show host seriously had no clue about what was happening when Joaquin showed up with a bedraggled beard and sunglasses for the infamous interview. Check out Joaquin’s “I’m Still Here” Letterman interview HERE.
