Raquel Pomplun has been named the 54th Playboy Playmate of the Year, making her the first Mexican-American to hold the title.

Eighty-seven-year-old Hugh Hefner raved about 25-year-old Pomplun at a luncheon held on Thursday at the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills, Calif., as he announced to attendees that she would take the coveted title.

“This year’s Playmate of the Year is a winner in every way,”he said. “Since becoming Miss April, Raquel has become extremely popular through personal appearances…She’s been a host on Playboy Radio’s Playboy Club and Playboy Presents. She’s a member of the Playboy Dancers. She’s also appeared as a host on Black Belt TV — so don’t mess around with her!”

Pomplun told reporters that she’s happy to represent Hefner’s brand. ”It’s overwhelming!” she said. “But I can take it. It’s a very big honor to be representing such an iconic brand. I’m the 54th Playmate of the Year! And it’s so cool. I’m so happy.”

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner recently revealed in an interview with Esquire magazine that he’s slept with too many women to count.

“How could I possibly know? Over a thousand, I’m sure,” he said in the interview. “There were chunks of my life when I was married, and when I was married I never cheated. But I made up for it when I wasn’t married. You have to keep your hand in.”

“Crystal convinced me that she adored me. That was the first lie.”

This is all very strange to me. Well, that sounds dumb–after all, there was a 60 year age difference between them. But what confuses me is that I thought these two split amicably. Apparently, the term “sentimental value” doesn’t hold any weight with the recently single, Crystal Harris.

The blonde bombshell was spotted at Prospect Jewelers, a San Diego area jewelry store, this weekend, getting her enormous engagement bling, er – ring, appraised.

When asked for some pretty basic information regarding the ring, the former Girls Next Door star was overheard calling the Playboy Mansion to get info regarding the cut, quality and clarity of the diamond.  Sounds like Ms. Harris is looking to make a little dough off her broken engagement!

According to a TMZ report, when the jewelry store owner offered his condolences on her broken engagement with Hugh Hefner, the Playmate merely laughed and said, “Are you kidding? It was all for publicity.”

It’s true, a phony engagement is standard procedure when you’re not getting enough media attention for being part of Hugh Hefner’s harem.  Crystal was just following the playbook.
