In the movie based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, the 48 year-old actor plays an itinerant journalist Paul Kemp who moves to Puerto Rico and becomes addicted to rum and one woman named Chenault (played by Amber).

“The Rum Diary” became Johnny’s least successful movie with a poor opening week in the US. Hopefully, it can do better outside of the US. I’m pretty sure most Americans will never understand the genius mind of the writer behind this story.

Actor Johnny Depp, whose upcoming movie “The Rum Diary” comes out later this month, stirred controversy when he compared being photographed for a photo shoot to being raped in an interview for the November 2011 issue of Vanity Fair Magazine.

“You just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped. The whole thing. It feels like a kind of weird—just weird, man…. Whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it’s like—you just feel dumb. It’s just so stupid,” the 48 year-old actor photographed by Terry Richardson said of photo shoot sessions.

Why? Oh why? Why did Johnny have to go there? As a BIG Depp fan, I can understand if he feels his soul is violated during a photo session, but why did he have to use the word “rape”. It’s not about what you say, it’s how you say it.

Last year, Twilight’s Kristen Stewart was highly criticized for comparing violation of privacy by the paparazzi to rape, but she kind of had a point. I just do not understand how a photo shoot can be that harmful. Seriously, Johnny? Then, say “NO”.

The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) issued a statement on Johnny’s inappropriate comments:

“While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape — a violent crime which affects another American every two minutes. RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help.”

Johnny quickly issued a formal apology, admitting it was a real poor choice of words. “I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling,” Depp said. “I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful. In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.”

Apology accepted. Meanwhile, Johnny also revealed the true reason why he is still working his butt off instead of enjoying a more peaceful life with his family in the island he bought in the Bahamas.

“Basically, if they’re going to pay me the stupid money right now, I’m going to take it,” he says in Vanity Fair’s November issue. “I have to. I mean, it’s not for me. Do you know what I mean? At this point, it’s for my kids. It’s ridiculous, yeah, yeah. But ultimately is it for me? No. No. It’s for the kids.”

“The Rum Diary” hits theaters on October 28, 2011.

Super-actor Johnny Depp has been dating his girlfriend, Vanessa Paradis, for 12 years — long enough for a common law marriage. But why hasn’t he bitten the bullet and said “I do”?

Johnny tells Extra:

“I never found myself needing that piece of paper,”
“Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say, okay you’re married… If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not… But the thing is, I’d be so scared of ruining her last name. She’s got such a good last name.”

A good point I suppose, since Paradis is almost paradise and parade and parties, if you stretch it.
Johnny and Vanessa have two not-so-little kids together, too — 8-year-old John Christopher and 11-year-old Lily-Rose Melody.

If it works for them, why change what they have? I say good on them!

IMDB says the story:

“Revolves around Frank, an American tourist visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path.”

Ooh, intriguing! The new trailer was posted to the film’s official Youtube page, and is half as long as the first trailer released in September, which clocked in at over 2 minutes.

9-year-old Beatrice Delap had no idea that her wish would come true when she sent a letter to Johnny Depp‘s Pirates of the Caribbean character Jack Sparrow — much like writing to Santa or the Easter Bunny (they’re VERY busy).

In her letter, Beatrice asked for Jack Sparrow’s help in ‘fighting’ her teachers:

“We are a bunch of budding young pirates. Normally we’re a right handful, but we’re having trouble mutinying against the teachers. We’d love it if you could come and help.”

Johnny Depp, who is in London filming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, showed up at the girl’s primary school on Wednesday in full costume.

Beatrice told the London Tonight news team an account of the meeting:

“He asked where I was in the audience. I put my hand up and then I had to go up and he gave me a hug,”

“He said, ‘Maybe we shouldn’t mutiny today because there are police outside monitoring me.’ ”

“I said, ‘Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.’ “

Too cute! And, as I’m sure he knows, GREAT publicity for Depp and the next Pirates film.

But really, what a wonderful guy!!

Actress Penelope Cruz, who recently secretly married actor Javier Bardem, and actor Johnny Depp were spotted filming their first scenes together for the fourth installment of Pirates Of The Caribbean, titled “On Stranger Tides”.

Penelope will play the daughter of Captain Jack Sparrow’s nemesis, Blackbeard (Ian McShane), described as the “nastiest pirate ever”. Producer Jerry Buckheimer revealed there will be a “little” romance between Johnny and Penelope.

“She plays the daughter of Blackbeard,” executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer told MTV. “She’s the daughter of the bad guy. She brings a lot of humor to it. And the fact that she’s so feisty. [There will be] a little romance between [Depp's] Captain Jack and the character that Penelope plays.”

Oh no! So Penelope will be a distraction in Sparrow’s search for the Fountain Of Youth. Lucky girl! A teaser trailer for “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” featuring the rum addicted Captain Sparrow was presented at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con (watch video below). Johnny is a genius! Actor Johnny Depp is the latest victim of a celebrity death hoax that quickly spread via Twitter last night. According to a fake CNN report, Johnny had been involved in a serious car accident in Bordeaux, France.

The actor’s body had supposedly been found inside the car among several liquor bottles. Their story is actually quite elaborate, totally creepy and completely false. Johnny is alive and well.
